Local Roundup: Carson High boys swim takes second

Douglas eventually pulled away in the two-team battle against Carson for the Northern 4A title in swimming, but the Senators will still be well-represented at the State Championships.

Carson fell just short of the zone title on Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Facility. But the CHS boys will be competing in a number of events at the State Championships to be held on Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Facility.

Carson had a number of swimmers who finished in the top three in their event to qualify for state. Douglas edged out Carson for the zone title as the Tigers finished with 378 points while CHS finished second with 371.

The Senators finished the meet in style, winning the 400 free relay as Nicholas Melsheimer, Matteas Klatt, Juan Brena Gutierrez and Alexander Gutierrez finished in 3:21.49.

Melsheimer also won the 50 free in 22.09 and the 100 butterfly in 52.97. Klatt won the 100 free in 48.06 and took second in the 200 free in 1;47.42.

Juan Brean Gutierrez, Melsheimer, Carlos Torres and Alexander Gutierrez also took third in the 200 medley relay in 1:42.72 and Klatt, Benjamin Kahue, Torres and Alexander Gutierrez took third in the 200 free relay in 1:32.72. Other top performers for Carson included Gabriel Crossman, who placed fourth in the 500 free in 5:22.45.

Carson’s girls finished seventh with 165 points behind Douglas (168), Reed (180), Manogue (226), Spanish Springs (337) and co-champions Reno and Galena (both with 376). Among the top performers for the CHS girls were Hannah Presley, Alexandria Perez Rojas, Leandra Blake and Talia Thornburg, who took fourth in the 400 free relay in 3:52.43.

SOFTBALL

McQueen 6, CHS 5

Carson fought to the end but just fell short of a State Championships berth on Saturday at the Northern 4A Championships at CHS. McQueen advanced to the Northern 4A Championships bracket and clinched a state berth.

CHS trailed 6-2 before its comeback fell just short. Carson scored two runs in the seventh to close to within 6-5 with Jailene Salciedo helping to spark the rally, but the Senators couldn’t push across the tying run.

Salciedo hit a solo homer in the fifth to bring CHS to within 6-3. Salciedo went 3-for-4 to lead Carson.

Lowry 15, Dayton 8

Dayton also fell short of a state berth on Saturday in the Northern 3A Championships at Elko as Lowry beat the Dust Devils to advance to the Northern 3A Championship bracket and clinch a state berth.

Lowry took a 5-0 lead in the first inning but Dayton came back to take an 8-6 lead in the fourth inning. But Lowry answered with five runs in the bottom of the fourth and four runs in the sixth.

Amanda Woitas, Aleea McGill-Howe and Elizabeth Vincent all drove in runs during Dayton’s third inning rally. Tamia Powell homered in the second to bring Dayton to within 5-1. Woitas hit a two-run shot in the fourth to give the Dust Devils an 8-6 lead.

Dayton had nine hits. Powell and Woitas each had two hits for the Dust Devils.
