A U.S. House Appropriations subcommittee voted to approve an energy spending bill that cuts funding to revive the development of Yucca Mountain as a nuclear waste storage site in a first step that sets up a likely battle between the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate over the project.
The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, and related agencies on Wednesday approved by voice vote its fiscal year 2020 bill. The $46.4 billion legislation for energy and water development programs doesn’t include the $116 million in President Donald Trump’s budget for Yucca Mountain.
The bill will move to the full committee for approval, which is expected. The Senate Appropriations Committee has yet to come up with an energy spending bill, but Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., said earlier this year Yucca Mountain is part of a long-range plan to address nuclear waste storage.
So there’s a good chance the House and Senate spending bills will differ on Yucca Mountain which would lead to a conference committee writing a final bill to reconcile the difference.
