Carson City supervisors consider bids for Brown Street property

The Board of Supervisors on Thursday will consider bids to buy property on Brown Street owned by Carson City.

In 2013, Western Nevada HOME Consortium transferred the property to the city after plans to build an affordable housing project there fell through. Carson City held on to it, hoping to attract another affordable housing project, but was told by developers the property was too small.

So, in January the board directed staff to ready it for sale and in September the supervisors issued a resolution to sell it and set the minimum bid at $300,000, the property’s fair market value.

Bids are due by the start of the meeting Thursday, when the board will open them and declare the highest bid from a responsible bidder that meets conditions. The board may also accept oral bids during the meeting so a public auction may take place at the meeting as well.

Lee Plemel, director, Community Development, will give an update on the city’s motel task force, which has been inspecting the city’s motels since 2016.

According to the staff report, there are four open cases, at the Whistle Stop Inn, the Silver Queen Inn, and The Nolan Inn, all of which recently changed ownership, and the Fifty Flats, formerly the Silver State Inn, which is expected to correct violations by the end of the year.

The board will decide whether to introduce on first reading an ordinance changing the zoning for a tentative planned unit development on Old Hot Springs Road. The plan was recommended by the Planning Commission.

The property developer plans to sell lots for RVs and manage a resort with clubhouse, pool, tennis courts and other amenities.
