Bears hunting man: John Franks came from the Lake and says that he saw two large cinnamon bears near Soda Springs. He had a rifle and fired at the bears bringing them down. The animals turned the tactics by turning on Franks who was chased several miles by the brown devils. He’s had enough of bear hunting for the season.

Picnic: The Comstock miners will be at Treadway Park reveling in the cool shade and green grass — enjoying the flowers, sunshine and pretty girls. The Miners’ Union picnic is the largest of the year and one enjoyed the most in Carson.

Lake theater: A film of the airship trials of the Wright brothers will be shown at the Lake Theater — the aeroplane at 360 feet from the ground and flying over anchored balloons.

Treadway’s fruit: Uncle Treadway, who has a fine ranch near Carson City, sent General Winters, of Gold Hill, a lot of most splendid large, golden pippin apples, and some Sickles’ pears. Also a seductive kind of apple, which he calls a “maiden-maiden — blush.” It’s a real beauty, such as old Adam is supposed to have received from Eve. (Gold Hill News)

Hank Monk and Pete’s Wagon: After a good deal of hard coaxing, Hank risked his life in Pete’s wagon and visited the Springs. No amount of persuasion could get him into that swimming bath. He says he is neither a duck nor a goose, and besides he always takes his baths straight and cold, and when the boys began to peel, he turned on his heel and hoofed it back to town.

The Great Balloon Race: The Nevada Bell balloon, piloted by Garnerville’s Allen Anderson, won the race in 1994. He shows the balloon at schools, community events, charitable and fund raising events and gives tethered rides to school children and adults alike for no charge.

Closed for the season: The big hotel at Glenbrook closed its doors after having one of the most successful seasons ever. No less than 12,000 autos passed a given point between Glenbrook and State Line. In the coming year that number will double.

Unemployment pay up $4: The Nevada Legislature raised the maximum of unemployment compensation from $43 to $47 a week. Nevada was one of 17 states to raise workmen compensation benefits. Two states changed benefit payments from a fixed amount to flexible, based on annual weekly wage in the state.

No bus service: Carson City School District does not provide bus service to children living within a one-mile radius of their school, creating a 20 minute walk to school in some cases.
