The Mile High Jazz Band Association presents a jazz-related drive-in movie, “High Society,” on Wednesday, Aug. 19, and Thursday, Aug. 20, as part of the 2020 Jazz & Beyond Festival.
It will be shown in the parking lot of the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King St., in Carson City. Admission is free. Reservations are required for each vehicle and can be made by calling 775-883-4154.
The 1956 musical comedy, based on the earlier "Philadelphia Story," is set near the Newport Jazz Festival. It features Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, and Grace Kelly in her last movie role before becoming Princess Grace of Monaco. Music and lyrics are by Cole Porter.
Robin Holabird, film critic, author, and former Nevada Film Commissioner, will introduce the movie and provide commentary. The sound will be transmitted via radio signal on 107.5 FM to car radios or portable radios.
Smaller-to-medium vehicles load in at 7:30 p.m.; large vehicles at 8 p.m. Viewers may watch from inside or outside, in front or behind, or in the bed of a truck, and may bring chairs and snacks. No food or drinks will be sold. Please observe social distancing and wear a mask when outside your vehicle.
The event is presented in partnership with the Carson City Classic Cinema Club and is supported, in part, by a grant from the Great Basin Consulting Group (Mike Drews), by the Carson Cultural Commission, and private donations.
Jazz & Beyond Carson City Music and Art Festival, in its 17th year, includes, live, live-streamed, and virtual events.
The second annual Open Studio Art Tour will be held this weekend, on Saturday, Aug. 22, and Sunday, Aug. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 10 studios and galleries.
This free event features more than two dozen artists and eight solo musicians.
