Several ex-Greenwave stars, including a quartet of football players, will continue their athletic career at the next level.
Graduated seniors Julian Evans, Dylin Valerio, Levi Andrews and Josiah Rosario will play football at various schools this fall, Avery Strasdin will suit up for Adams State’s basketball team in Alamosa, Colo., and Shaw Lee will continue his baseball career at Butte College, a two-year school in Oroville, Calif. Evans and Valerio will join a handful of former teammates at Feather River, a two-year school in Quincy, Calif., Andrews heads to Butte and Rosario will play for Dordt University, a private evangelical Christian school in Sioux Center, Iowa.
It was difficult for opposing teams to stop Andrews and the Fallon running game last spring. Andrews carried the ball 83 times for 211 yards in four games, giving him a 211-yard average to go with 13 touchdowns. Andrews also played safety.
Valerio anchored both the offensive and defensive lines. The 300-pound lineman was instrumental on both sides as Fallon averaged more than 400 yards of offense and the defense wreaked havoc, sacking the opposing quarterback 18 times and forcing seven interceptions.
Evans played linebacker, ranking fifth on the team in tackles with 19 along with two sacks. Rosario, who played defensive back, picking up one interception, will play defense at Dordt, which competes in the NAIA.
Lee, who played football, basketball and baseball through his junior year, didn’t compete during his final year in Fallon due to recovering from an injury. A member on the state championship football and basketball teams, Lee made the varsity baseball team as a freshman, leading Fallon to a state championship berth as a sophomore.
A three-sport star who was named a Top 10 student-athlete by the NIAA, Strasdin chose basketball despite his senior season not happening due to COVID.
He will suit up for Adams State, which competes in the Rocky Mountain Conference in the NCAA Division II. The Grizzlies finished 10-9 in a shortened season due to the pandemic, but went 1-1 in the conference tournament, losing to the country’s fifth-best team, Colorado Mesa, which won the tournament before losing in the NCAA regional’s first round.
At Fallon, Strasdin shined in basketball, football and baseball.
In his only two seasons on varsity and playing for his mother, Chelle Dalager, Strasdin came off the bench as a sophomore to help Fallon win its first state title in almost 50 years. During his junior year, his 3-pointer in overtime of the Northern 3A regional championship gave Fallon the win over Elko. Fallon met Elko again when the Greenwave outlasted the Indians in overtime for their second-straight state title.
As a senior, Strasdin led Fallon to an undefeated 3A East record and championship over Spring Creek. Two months later, he also helped the Greenwave to another league title when Fallon upset Dayton for the baseball championship.
