Quite a frost occurred yesterday morning, which did some damage to tender garden truck. It is a relief to have the hot weather broken, but frost is not welcome yet.

Two games of baseball were played in Ormsby county Sunday, one at the prison and the other on grounds in the northwest part of town. The Nevada State Prison nine played rings around the Journal team of Reno and won 23-3. “The Ship” team of Carson defeated the Reno nine by a score of 20 to 19.

William F. (“Billy”) Wilson, the well-known stage man, and Matt Pixley have leased the Warm Springs Hotel. The house will hereafter be under the supervision of Mr. and Mrs. Pixley. The new management will add greatly to the popularity of this favorite place.

Laying the corner stone: The corner stone of the Reno Insane Asylum was laid under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity. H. S. Mas, Worshipful Grand Master of the State, was Master of Ceremonies. Several thousand people were present and a banquet was held.

All sorts: The mosquitoes are still doing their assessment work in this county and are very active in their operations.
A gasoline tricycle will soon be in operation on the Eureka and Palisade railroad to carry the mail a distance of ninety miles.

Trip around Lake Tahoe: Masons and their guests made a trip around Lake Tahoe. They were on a big barge that was towed from point to point, and at Tahoe City lunch was spread. It was one of the finest days of the year with music, recitals, lunch and games.

Ava Gardner: Movie Actress Ava Gardner paid her $15 to the City of Carson as a result of a speeding ticket. Miss Gardner will marry crooner Frank Sinatra when he gets his Nevada divorce.

Following is a list of the new books ordered to be used by the State Board of Education, with prices to school patrons: McGuffey’s Readers, 1st; 15 cents; 2nd 30 cents; 3rd 40 cents; McGuffey’s Speller 15 cents. Eclectic Geographies, Primary 15 cents; Intermediate $1.25; Harvey’s Grammars, Elementary 35 cents; English 75 cents.

Spiritual medium: Mrs. Mayer is creating a sensation in Carson. If half what people say about her is true, she can almost raise the dead. Skeptics go to her seances and come out with their eyes bulged out and avow their utter astonishment at her revelations.

V & T Troubles: Frank Murphy came up from Carson and swore out a warrant charging G. M. Shotwell with being a defaulter. Shotwell just arrived from Mexico and was placed as an operator to attend to the Virginia and Gold Hill telegraph works. He had money for freight received in Gold Hill. The money was forwarded to Carson, and it was discovered that $70 was missing. Shotwell made good the amount taken with the exception of about $20, and the charge against him was withdrawn.

Rita Hayworth: Miss Hayworth will come to Carson and leave it up to the Nevada courts what Prince Aly Khan is to pay when she divorces him. The couple have a 20-month old daughter, Yasmin. Miss Hayworth will ask for sole custody of the child and will let her decide herself whether she will be brought up in the Moslem faith.

Social Security: Social Security paid $31 million through the end of the year to dead people who were listed as deceased in the agency’s own electronic files. One woman who died in November 1993 was still receiving benefit checks in May 2000 and auditors said more than $100,000 in benefits had been paid after her death.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006. Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan.
