Gov. Steve Sisolak issued a statement Tuesday saying Dec. 14 marks the anniversary when the first doses of COVID-19 vaccines arrived in the Silver State.
That first batch was just 17,550 doses of the Pfizer vaccines. Now, one year later, more than half of eligible Nevadans have received at least one dose of vaccine.
He thanked the health professionals in the state who have worked nonstop through the pandemic to care for residents adding the vaccine rollout continues to be a historic and monumental task that would be impossible without those professionals working on the front lines.
“The work is tremendous but is nowhere near done,” he said. “We are continuing to use every tool at our disposal to reach Nevadans and make sure they have access to their first dose, second dose or a booster shot.”
That includes partnering with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to take the government up on its offer to send “surge teams” to the state to help with vaccination and outreach efforts. Those teams concentrated their efforts on Southern Nevada zip codes with low vaccination rates and high infection rates, supporting 436 vaccination events.
Sisolak urged those not yet vaccinated to get the shot saying that is still the best protection against the disease. Everyone aged 5 and older is now eligible for a vaccination.
