The preseason especially against teams from the Northern 3A West division is definitely providing some insight to this year’s Greenwave boys basketball team.
After defeating North Valleys, 47-40, at home Thursday in a game that resembled the roughness of playground hoops, the Wave let a lead slip in the second half to lose to Hug on Saturday afternoon, 67-57, at the Elmo Dericco Gym. Fallon is now 7-5 in nonleague play.
“We're just trying to get some of our own kids the experience to be successful,” said boys’ coach Chelle Dalager  “They did alright against North Valleys. We've got to manage the clock, which is important in game situations in the future.”
Fallon was on fire in the first half against North Valleys, outscoring the Panthers 18-5. Tyler Austin powered the Wave in the first quarter with 12 points. Kanigh Snyder added four points and Brun Collin a basket.
The Panthers made a run against the Wave in the second quarter, slowly chipping away at the lead to trail 28-21 at halftime
Cameron Zeidler scored six points including a free throw on a technical foul. Four other players from North Valleys combined for 10 points.

The Wave had problems making their shots in the second quarter. Snyder scored six points, four from the free-throw line. Francisco Tapia and Collin each added a basket.
Cold shooing plagued both teams in the third quarter with Fallon tallying 11 points to the Panthers’ 10. The fourth quarter also saw some low scoring with Fallon outshooting the Panthers, 9-8.
Snyder led Fallon with 14 points, and Collin added six. Brady Alves and Jace Nelson each scored four.
Both teams combined for more than 30 fouls, and Fallon turned the ball over 23 times.
"We were outrebounded by North Valleys,” Dalager said. “We’re trying to jump with people and not box out. We did a better job running our offenses. Once we got our zone offense going, we did just fine.”
Dalager said she doesn’t think the Wave will blow anyone out of the gym and figures Fallon’s games will be tight.
“The games are going to be close all the time because we struggle shooting,” she said. “We don’t have consistent scoring.”
No stats were available by deadline for the Hug game but will be available online. Hug, though, picked up its first win of the season against the Wave.
"We were very flat and defensively, we really struggled,” Dalager said. “In the fourth quarter, we put the starters back in and went into a full court press. By then it was too late. (Hug)  made a couple outside shots. We just got spaced too far apart, and we had a hard time catching up because we can’t score like that.”
Dalager said Fallon didn’t play well, especially on defense.
“We can’t give up 67 points to a team that has only two scorers,” she said. “Our starters were lackadaisical and didn’t rotate in the press. They kept beating us off the dribble.”
Dalager, though, said the team didn’t rotate it traps, something the Wave has one well in previous games.
