All sorts: Mrs. Beck in the Penrod block of Carson street offers for sale a ranch containing ten acres of land, a two-story house, kitchen, sheds and barns. It is situated near the Carson race track on Warm Springs Road. Included are a span of fine mules, a wagon, and a large stock of dry and millinery goods.
A St. Patrick’s Day Ball will be given at Genoa to which the public is cordially invited.

Tall bonnets: Communications have been received at the Appeal regarding tall bonnets being worn by women at theatre. In response the gentleman suggested that they secure the front seats and wear stovepipe hats during the performance. This would allow the ladies to see how annoying it is to have their line of sight obstructed.

Colonel Curry’s travels: Colonel Abe Curry returned from Washington City [sic] having succeeded in getting through an appropriation for paying off the United States Branch Mint in Carson. Uncle Abe gives a glowing description of the great carnival held there.

Billy goat: Young Hanifan of Empire was brought to Carson to have a wound dressed. It was caused by being thrown out of a cart drawn by a Billy goat. Hanifan's knee cap was nearly cut off, but the attending physicians pronounced it as an ugly laceration.

Relief for Mrs. Bowers: Mrs. Bowers, the “Washoe Seeress,” is very destitute and her friends on this coast are arranging to help her in her old age.. Those who desire to donate contributions however small, can leave them at any Wells Fargo office in this State, from whence they will be forwarded to the main office in San Francisco and given to her.

Carson City growth: The capital has passed the 50,000 population mark, and it is now considered a metropolitan area. The census revealed a population of 52,457, a 29.7 percent increase from 40,443 ten years ago.

Mysterious powers: John Slater, the test medium and physic gave a wonderful exhibition at the Odd Fellows’ Hall. He kept the audience amused and mystified for over an hour. He is a wonderful man, and an “instrument” governed by forces. While Slater was out of the room, various articles were placed on the stage by people in the hall. When he returned, he picked up the articles and accurately described the owners.

Beta Sigma Phi: PSI Chapter had a “crazy hat’ party at the meeting at the home of Mrs. Fred Gatten. Prizes were given for the two cleverest hats. Winners were Mrs. Caro Pendergraft and Mrs. Walter Ashton. Pirate bridge was played and prizes won by Mrs. Les Vannoy, Mrs. Burke Shaughnessy, Mrs. Stanley Pochop and Mrs. Pendergraft.

Cinderella story: Western Nevada Musical Theatre Youth Company will hold auditions for its summer production of “Cinderella.” Auditions are open to boys and girls through age 21. The production is considered a course and all those who earn roles must register with the college.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
