After only getting Monday to practice last week, Douglas High football and head coach Ernie Monfiletto are happy to at least feel fully prepped going into Friday’s contest.
The Tigers will welcome Reno High (1-1) to town for a 6 p.m. kickoff that will also serve as Senior Night for Douglas.
“No. 1 on the list, is you play like you practice,” said Monfiletto. “Not practicing the week before had an impact on our performance.”
The Huskies are coming off a tough loss last week to Spanish Springs, 48-7, in which they allowed 214 yards through the air and 105 on the ground.
Figuring out the Huskies
A 42-6 loss to Damonte Ranch was not the Saturday afternoon showcase the Tigers were looking for last weekend.
However, the Mustangs use of unusual formations and sets is also something Monfiletto expects to see from Reno.
“Reno High School is unorthodox in their defensive front,” said Monfiletto. “At times they’ll only show one or two down lineman and then they play two stand-up ends. They usually bring a lot of pressure from a lot of different places.”
The offset formations could give the Tigers a chance to run between the tackles, but Douglas might also have a shot at letting the offense shine through the air.
Spanish Springs’ quarterback Tristan Szabo went 15-of-17 through the air with four touchdown strikes.
It could be a timely matchup for the Douglas offense, which was able to muster just 152 total yards of offense.
Monfiletto said the recipe for success for the Tigers is going to fall on the shoulders of the offensive line.
“I think it puts a lot of pressure on them,” said Monfiletto. “Last week we faced a team that was also unorthodox and brought a lot of pressure.”
Reno put up 49 points in an opening-week win before posting one score in its loss to Spanish Springs last week.
