The Gold Hill News of last evening says all of the witnesses who have been examined thus far, with the exception of the woman Nellie Sayers, have confirmed their testimony as given before the Coroner at the time of the inquest.

It will be well for impecunious opium smokers to note that under the law they will not be permitted to “hit the pipe” after 12 o’clock to-night. Particular stress is laid upon the word impecunious because the arrest of that class of smokers will put the county to expense.

Incendiary. The alarm of fire last evening was the result of a blaze in the rear of Mrs. Davis’ dressmaking shop. A strong smell of coal oil and a bottle partly filled with the fluid gives the appearance of incendiaries. There have been sever suspicious characters in the city lately who ought to be doing street gardening. The hose carts were promptly at hand.

The recent whipping of the boy Gray at the Orphan’s Home has revived numbers of stories relative to the institution which have been current during the past year. Not long ago a committee visited the Home to look into the methods of management and found everything correct. Shortly afterwards a lady teacher related to residents of this city how at different times outrageous cruelties had been practiced. When asked why she did not tell the committee she replied that being employed at the Home she did not like to say anything. On several occasions the inmates of the institution have run away from it to escape the rigors of its discipline.

Sheriff Swift is a pretty good Indian, so to speak, and a detective of rather superfluous length, as it were. Anyhow, the detection of crime has become a second nature to him and he has never been entirely non-pluses until now. He has been interviewing men from China, big and little, ever since the assassination of the other night, but can obtain no evidence. He has satisfied himself, however, that the wrong man was assassinated the other night, and that the account for the murder has been settled, according to the Chinese Code, and that no evidence will be adduced at the inquest to-day. It will be a case of “no sabe” throughout.

Fire Bugs. Attempts were made late Wednesday night to set fire to Torreyson’s blacksmith shop, and to Kaiser’s up-town restaurant. These fires were, of course, started by incendiaries. The police have a clue to the offenders, and if they are not without the city limits within the next twenty-four hours they will be caged and booked fo the State prison.

Yesterday afternoon a little after 3 o’clock Mrs. George Cagwin was asked by her seven year old child to “come and see a bond fire.” She followed the child into the next room and found that he had piled some old clothes, paper, etc. in a head and set fire to it. She and the neighbors set about fighting the flames and an alarm was sounded. the Warren Hose cart started to the scene but could do nothing as the house was nearly to the edge of the city limits and the nearest water plug, three-blocks. The steamer did not arrive until after George Cagwin’s house was destroyed.

The Assessors of the State, acting as a State Board will meet at the Capitol building tomorrow and proceed to act under the new revenue law. As the Governor’s office is rather small, he has shown his intention of having the meeting in the Supreme Court room, where the public can look on.

More Sidewalks. The work of laying concrete sidewalks is starting early this spring. Already one section of the block west of the Park hotel is near finished, while others are preparing for concrete laying. The work of last summer was appreciated during the winter months.
