After the Fallon boys and girls tennis teams advanced to the semifinals of the Northern 3A team tournament last week, the Greenwave turns the corner to this weekend’s singles and doubles regional tournament.
The Fallon boys took down North Tahoe, 12-5, in last Monday’s team tournament quarterfinals before losing to top-seed South Tahoe, 14-4, on Wednesday. The Lady Wave bested Hug, 12-6, last Tuesday but fell to top-seed Truckee, 15-3, on Thursday.

The Greenwave tennis teams, though, get another shot in the postseason. At stake is a berth to the state tournament in Las Vegas next week.
The single-elimination regional tournament begins at 9 a.m. on Friday in Truckee with the first two rounds before the semifinals and championship conclude the event on Saturday. The top-four finishers advance to state. Each round is a best-of-three sets; during the regular season, matches were one set.
Senior Kyla Trotter is the highest seed for Fallon, ranking No. 2, and she will open the round of 16 with Sparks’ Jane Carbajal. The winner faces either No. 7 Kate Bouska of Wooster or Maia McDermott of Truckee. Ashlynn Gilman drew No. 5 Mia Jones of Truckee in her opening match and the winner awaits either No. 4 Kiara Vasquez of South Tahoe or Incline’s Jordan Stevens.

Both of Fallon’s doubles teams are seeded with Kasey Lattin and Thalia DeLaCruz as the No. 4 seed, and Isabelle Nuckolls and Shiloh Pequeno are No. 7.
Lattin and DeLaCruz will face South Tahoe’s Erin Yamaoka and Nora Stewart in the first round with the winner taking on either No. 5 Soleil Weed and Lauren Rosmos or North Valleys’ LaKenya Stallworth and Megan Dondero. Nuckolls and Pequeno will face Wooster’s Bosha Owasu and Cassandra Buchanan with the winner facing either No. 2 Amber Hansford and Naomi Park of Truckee or Carla Grimm and Nayeli Lopez-Silva of Sparks.
For the boys, Owen Palmer is seeded No. 4 in singles and will open against Wooster’s Liam Durling in the round of 16. The winner takes on the winner of No. 5 Will Kneibler of Wooster and Truckee’s Gavin Spear in the quarterfinals. On the other side of the bracket is Brody Allyn, who will face South Tahoe’s Brennan Monroe, the No. 6 seed. The winner faces either No. 3 Gabe Smith of Truckee or Paul Kenyon of North Tahoe.

Austin Hawkins

In doubles, the brother duo of Sammy and Nathan Lords is ranked No. 3 and they will face North Valleys’ Ricky Iniguez and Christian Lopez. The winner faces either Truckee’s Thomas Geary and Forest Wunderlick, the No. 6 seed, or Hug’s Seth Begonia and Alden Quandt. The team of Joey Nuckolls and Austin Hawkins take on the No. 5 seed, South Tahoe’s Garrett Friederici and Kade Schauben. The winner faces the No. 4 seed from Truckee, Jack Breiter and Justin Pullen, or Sparks’ Emigdio Soto and Jonathan Garcia.
