The playoff races are heating up with only one week to go in the regular season.
The Lady Wave soccer team picked up a pair of necessary league wins last week, shutting out Fernley, 4-0, and Dayton, 8-0, to set up a showdown with a pair of Elko County schools on the road. Fallon is 4-2-2 in the 3A East and secured a finish no worse than third after the sweep over the Lyon County schools. Fallon, though, can jump to second by sweeping Spring Creek and Elko this week. Only the top-three teams advance to next weekend’s regional tournament in Winnemucca.
The Lady Wave volleyball team is not out of the race despite losing back-to-back five-set matches to Fernley and Dayton. Fallon also travels to Spring Creek and Elko this week and needs to sweep both in addition to Lowry losing its last two matches, also against Spring Creek and Elko. A Fallon loss or Lowry win eliminates the Greenwave from playoff contention and Lowry will get the No. 3 and last seed from the 3A East.
The regional tournament is next weekend in Fallon.
The boys soccer team knocked off Fernley, 1-0, last week and faced Dayton on Monday. It hosts Spring Creek and Elko this week to end the season. Fallon sat 0.5 game behind Spring Creek for third and needed to win on Dayton to set up a showdown with the Spartans for the final playoff spot.
Oasis Academy lost to No. 1 Smith Valley last week and hosts Coral Academy on Saturday for Senior Day. The Bighorns, No. 6 in league, were eliminated from playoff contention.
