Churchill County Museum

• Museum open house: Mark your calendars. The Churchill County Museum annual holiday open house is Dec. 17.

They will have crafts and light refreshments starting at 12:30 p.m. and a performance by the delightful Tintabulations Handbell Ensemble at 1 p.m.

• The Churchill County Museum Association’s Mad Hatter’s Ball and Auction is Dec. 31 from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Tickets are $75 individual or $550 for a table of eight. Tickets are available at the Churchill County Museum.


New Year’s Fun Run

The Parks & Recreation Department’s New Year’s Day 5k run, walk or crawl divisions include male and female in 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60-69 and 70 and older. There’s online pre-registration and registration on the day of the race. Check in next to Fallon City Hall is from 9-9:50 a.m. with the race/walk beginning at 10 a.m.

Preregistration fees are $20 but $30 on the day of the race. For a family of four, the pre-registration cost is $75 and $100 on the actual day.

WNC nursing

WNC's Nursing program applicants are reminded of upcoming dates to take the required entrance exam (Test of Essential Academic Skills). Testing is scheduled Jan. 26, Feb. 3, Feb. 24, March 3 and March 16. Testing is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Cedar Building 320 on the Carson City campus.

Check in at 8:30 a.m. Students must complete the entrance exam no later than April 1 to be considered for admission into the Fall 2023 Nursing program.

Vaccines

No immunization or on-site COVID testing will be offered after Dec. 8 for the remainder of the month as staffing changes happen set up the Central Nevada Health District.

In lieu of on-site COVID testing, free at-home rapid tests are available for pick-up or delivery. Call 775-423-6695, option 2, to arrange. Immunizations and COVID testing services also available at local pharmacies.

The Central Nevada Health District will serve Churchill, Eureka and Mineral Counties along with the City of Fallon when it is established next month.


Christmas dinner

American Legion Post 16, its auxiliary, other military organizations and volunteers will deliver Meals on Wheels dinners on Christmas day since the William N. Pennington Life Center (senior center) will be closed.

Sailors, current and retired military personnel and community members wishing to deliver meals or prepare meals for delivery should arrive at the hall, 90 N. Ada St., between 8:30-9 a.m.

Once volunteers arrive at the hall, they will pack food into containers and then drive different routes within the city limits and in the county to deliver hot meals to the area senior citizens. The American Legion normally seeks about 30 volunteers to help with the preparation and/or delivery.

The American Legion post also provides the volunteers and donations to buy turkeys and all the fixings.

Their annual Christmas dinner for the community is from 11 a.m-1 p.m.

December events:

  • Read: “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” encourages youngsters to read age-appropriate books before entering school. Book titles are suggested and offered by library staff. Sign-ups accepted at any time.
  • In-person “Storytime with Ms. Jes” offered Wednesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m. Children’s Librarian Jeslyn MacDiarmid reads picture books to children and offers a craft to accompany most stories. Each session is recorded and posted to the library’s YouTube account for on-demand viewing at your convenience.
  • Explore: Writer’s Group meets Tuesdays at 5 p.m. Discover what area writers are inspired by and working on and bring your own manuscript for inspiration.
  • Knitting Club meets on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and Thursdays at 4 p.m. All are welcome from the beginner to advanced skilled folks.
  • Enjoy: Featured artist for December and January is Jim Zlokovich. Library walls will feature his cloud images.
  • Hours of operation: Library hours of operation are Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed on Sundays and major holidays.


BLM Christmas tree permits

The Bureau of Land Management, Carson City District, is selling Christmas tree permits. The permit is valid from the date of purchase through Dec. 25.

To purchase a Christmas tree permit online, visit https://forestproducts.blm.gov/ and search for Nevada, Carson City District Office.

The cost per tree permit is $5. Upon purchase of a permit, a map and permit stipulations will be provided. No more than 10 permits may be purchased by one individual; the permits are for individual use only.

The permit allows the purchaser to cut only a pinyon pine or juniper tree. The cutting of all other tree species is prohibited.

Christmas trees may be harvested on all Carson City District BLM administered lands, primarily in the Pine Nut Mountains between Carson City and Yerington, the Clan Alpine and Desatoya Mountains east of Fallon, and the Excelsior Mountains southeast of Hawthorne. No cutting of Christmas trees within wilderness study areas and to be conscious of not cutting Christmas trees near city/residential areas.

NDA seeks nomination

The Nevada Department of Agriculture and Made in Nevada are seeking nominations for the second annual Nevada Agriculture, Food and Beverage Small Business of the Year Award. This annual award recognizes the extraordinary work done by agriculture, food and beverage industries in Nevada. Nominations are due by Dec. 23.

Nominations are encouraged for any Nevada small business that provides locally produced agriculture, food or beverage products. Businesses are also able to self-nominate. To be eligible, businesses must be licensed in Nevada, produce or manufacture at least 51 percent of their agriculture, food or beverage product in Nevada and have less than 150 employees. Nominations can be made at agri.nv.gov.
