Carson City leadership class renovating patio for children’s home

The Carson City Chamber of Commerce will graduate its Leadership Institute Class of 2022 in May. But first, they’re working on their big final project: a sensory garden for Eagle Valley Children’s Home. “Our clientele, they all have sensory processing issues. Some of our guys are cortically blind. Their vision is very poor and limited. … We have some individuals who are deaf. (The sensory garden will help them) engage with their environment more,” said Kelee Melin, a leadership class participant who’s been with EVCH for over 20 years. EVCH celebrated its 75th anniversary last year. The back patio isn’t that old, but Melin said that it’s in desperate need of new pavers, plants, and a touch of paint. The renovations will address some safety issues and make the space enjoyable for residents. Leadership Class team leader Mindi Dagerman said that everyone she’s talked to has been hyped for the project. “There’s a lot of great energy. People want to get their hands dirty,” she told the Appeal over the phone. But before they can get soil on their hands, they need to raise money for their coffers. The class and EVCH has a $25,000 goal. Melin is hoping that they can also partner with local artists to put murals on the outdoor walls. Dagerman has been stirring interest with local companies to donate materials. “We can bring some real light to the residents,” Dagerman said. Melin said that she’s happy that the children’s home is getting community interest and involvement. “What you see here is the love and the care that’s given to the clients and trying to do right by them in all areas,” she said.
