Wednesday at Reno High, the Tiger wrestling team split its two duals, falling to Reed 42-36 before taking down Reno 54-24.
Hunter Morris put together two wins by pin for Douglas with the first coming against Reed in 2:04, before winning his second match at 120 pounds with a pin in 4:41.
Braeden Hudder (182 pounds), Manuel Garcia (195), Luke Fournier (106) and Conner Morris (126) all went 2-0 as well with one win by forfeit before picking up a second win on the mat.
Hudder, Garcia and Fournier all won by fall while Morris picked up a 10-4 decision win.
Conner Jackson earned six points for a pin in 1:30 against Reno while Jaxon Nixon picked up three more via a 14-8 decision win.
Carson High wrestling sees sophomores leading the way
After dropping both duals Wednesday at home, Carson High wrestling head coach Nick Redwine said he was still pleased with the way the Senators handled their second dual.
After falling to Spanish Springs, 66-16, the Senators just missed out on picking up a “W” against McQueen, losing 48-33.
“I thought we, maybe, were a little scared. We weren’t expecting the power that Spanish Springs wrestled with,” said Redwine. “Against McQueen, I thought we looked a lot better. A lot tougher … I’m actually really happy with how we wrestled against McQueen.”
Amber Perkins (113), Lucas Wold (120) and Anthony Garrobo (126) all earned wins by fall against McQueen.
Wold and Garrobo both added wins against the Cougars as well with Wold solidifying a first period pin and Garrobo taking an 11-3 major decision.
Jon Barnes-Hurt put together an impressive buzzer-beating, 5-4 decision win against McQueen that also caught the eye of his head coach.
“I think it shows a lot more maturity on his part from the last time he wrestled varsity,” said Redwine. “He understands the mat awareness to not give up two in that situation.”
UP NEXT: Carson will head to Reed on Wednesday for another triangular against the Raiders and Bishop Manogue.
Douglas hoops hangs with Bishop Manogue
With a 22-point fourth quarter Thursday, the Tiger boys’ basketball team gave the Miners of Bishop Manogue a scare.
Douglas fell 67-60, but put Bishop Manogue (8-8, 5-1) on the ropes in the game’s final minutes.
Kasen Boggs led the way with 20 points, six rebounds and five steals.
Dakota Jones was also active in the passing lanes, swiping six steals to go along with his six points.
JC Reid put up nine points for the Tigers while Chris Smalley scored six points and pulled down seven rebounds.
The loss ends the Tigers’ seven-game winning streak.
UP NEXT: Douglas (8-5, 3-2 in 5A league play) is in action today against Spanish Springs (9-5, 5-0).
Miner girls too much for Tigers
Douglas High girls’ basketball Thursday dropped just its second game in its last eight appearances.
Bishop Manogue was able to pull away for a 70-44 win behind Dresslerville native Jaileen Yarrow’s double-double where she put up 17 points and 10 rebounds.
In total, the Miners took away 18 steals in the win.
UP NEXT: Douglas (8-4, 3-2) hosts Spanish Springs (3-11, 1-4) today with tip-off coming at 12:30 p.m.
