Douglas High girls’ basketball showed some of the effects of not having practiced since in the last six days Tuesday night in a loss to Reno.
The Huskies, who defeated Douglas to open the season, posted their second win over the Tigers this season by a final of 43-30.
“They were concerned about it. You try as a coach to alleviate some of that,” said Douglas head coach Brian Mello. “I don’t know how much that played into it, but we didn’t shoot the ball well tonight.”
Tied at 17-all at the half, Reno used to a 9-2 run to spur a 26-19 lead.
Adia Walker picked a steal and turned it into a layup before Kirsten Martin got red hot from beyond the arc.
Martin, who had two points in the first half, posted 14 points on her own in the second half.
She closed the third quarter with a wing triple before grabbing a steal and turning it into a layup on the other end.
Reno outscored Douglas 16-4 in the third quarter, taking a 33-21 lead into the final eight minutes.
However, the Tigers had their chances in the final period.
Addy Doerr sank two free throws and converted an and-one opportunity to go with a Camden Miller baseline bucket.
After Doerr’s and-one, the Tigers had cut the deficit to 33-28, but it was the closest Douglas could get.
Martin drained back-to-back triples from the wing to put Reno back in front by 11, 39-28.
“We’ve been playing against her in AAU forever. You give her a little bit of space and she is going to knock it down. At times we did a great job and at other times we got a little tired,” said Mello.
Offensively, Douglas struggled to find a rhythm as Doerr led the Tigers with eight points. Katrina Butalon, who had five points in the opening half, finished the night with seven for Douglas.
“Addy is a big part of what we’re doing and we couldn’t really get her going consistently. We will be alright,” said Mello.
UP NEXT: Douglas (10-5, 5-3 in Class 5A league play) will be back at home Thursday when the Tigers host Carson (2-13, 1-8) in a makeup for the game postponed last Friday.
“We’re moving on. We’re going to use tomorrow to get better. Before the COVID nonsense, we were rolling. I know we have it in us,” added Mello.
