An annual robotics/engineering mini-camp for boys and girls ages 8-14 and their parents takes place Tuesday, July 19 at 10 a.m. at the Silver City Schoolhouse, 385 High St., in Silver City.
The Society of Women Engineers Sierra Nevada section and FIRST Nevada, a nonprofit promoting robotics programs and STEAM education initiatives, lead the activity. The event is part of Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties’ science, technology, engineering, art and math program. The Silver City Volunteer Library co-hosts the mini-camp.
Patti Poston of FIRST Nevada said in a news release children “will compete in an exciting SumoBot competition after they write a program to make their EV3 robots go forward and back and drive in a square. Then they’ll build a robot ‘arm’ and form teams to compete with their robots.”
For parents with children ages 5 to 7, volunteers will be on-hand to help them learn some basics of engineering with Lego WeDo kits.
The mini-camp includes hand-outs about what engineers do, how to become an engineer, and how to find kids’ robotics and engineering clubs and activities in the Northern Nevada region.
