Fallon educator named to Lyon County board

A Fallon educator who lives in Fernley was selected Feb. 22 to fill an unexpired term on the Lyon County School Board, District 7.
Michael J. Hogan will retire from the Churchill County School District in June. He will succeed Kimber Lee Ann Crabtree, but he must file this month to seek election to the board seat later this year.
“With retiring at the end of this year, this position will enable me to continue my passion serving students and the community to ensure all students are college- and career-ready after graduation,” Hogan said in his letter of application. “My 30 years-plus experience as a teacher coach, athletic director, elementary principal and high school assistant principal provides me with the knowledge, growth and expertise to help make informed decisions as a valuable member of the school board.”
Hogan is currently vice principal at Churchill County High School, where he serves on the scholarship committee and test coordinator for the ACT, end-of-course exams and the state science test among others. He is also a member of the Churchill County School District attendance and discipline committees.
Prior to the high school assignment, Hogan was vice principal at Lahontan Elementary School from 2006-15. He implemented the 21st Century program with the four Cs: critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration. Hogan also initiated employee improvement plans, provided professional development for teachers and implemented a block schedule to protect high-need curriculum areas.
Before coming to Churchill County, Hogan moved from Montana to Fernley in 1999 where he taught biology and earth science at the high school. He was also an assistant football and track coach. He took a position in 2002 at Silver Stage High School where he taught biology and physical education and served as athletic director, head football coach and assistant baseball coach.
Hogan began his teaching career in in 1987 at Valler, Montana, and then moved to teach in the Three Forks School District.
Hogan attended Columbia Basin Community College and then the University of Montana where he received a Bachelor in Science in physical education and health. He earned a master’s degree in educational administration and leadership from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2004.
