Attorney General Aaron Ford and Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske Friday issued a joint warning about possible scams seeking donations to benefit Ukraine.
“Unfortunately, scammers use times of tragedy and unrest to take advantage of kind-hearted people trying to make a difference,” said Ford.
“We know criminals are opportunistic and use current events to disguise their schemes with an air of urgency and legitimacy,” said Cegavske.
They urged people to give to organizations they trust and make sure it’s a group that already has a presence in Ukraine. Be wary of giving out personal or financial information and never give Social Security numbers to alleged charities.
Look for similar sounding names and web addresses and look up charities in the IRS list of tax-exempt organizations.
Check with watchdog groups such as CharityWatch and CharityNavigator.
If donating to a crowdfunding platform, check the platform policies regarding distribution of money collected. It’s safest to donate only to crowdfunding campaigns if you know and trust the person or company that organized the campaign.
