Candidates Night for the primary election will focus on three races: State Senate 17, Assembly District 38 and County Commission District 2. The Churchill County Republican Central Committee is hosting the candidates night that begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Fallon Convention Center. Gary Smith will serve as moderator. The Fallon Post and Lahontan Valley News will select and ask the candidates questions. A number of questions have been tailored to the Lahontan Valley. For those who can’t attend, The Lahontan Broadcasting Company and KKTU (99.5 FM) will broadcast the event and also stream the event on https://network1sports.com. The first hour will place the spotlight on State Senate District 17 candidates Dr. Robin Titus, a Lyon County physician and current assemblywoman in District 38, and James Wheeler, a Douglas County rancher and current assemblyman for District 39. Both candidates are Republicans. The term for the senate position is four years. Current state Sen. James Settelmeyer is termed out. During the second hour, the candidates for Assembly District 38 will introduce themselves and then answer questions. Vida Keller, a Lyon County commissioner and Silver Springs real estate agent, and Dr. Greg Koenig, a Fallon optometrist, are both Republicans. The winner of the primary will serve in the Assembly. Running for Commission District 2 is Tanya Freeman, Myles Getto, Kenneth Harmon and Thomas Riggins. Since all the candidates are Republican, the winner of the primary election will serve as commissioner for the next four years. Current commissioner Pete Olsen is termed out and unable to seek re-election for District 2. Richard Grondin was the only candidate who filed for the nonpartisan Mosquito, Vector & Noxious Weed Abatement Board. Candidates who filed for the primary election are invited to bring campaign material to distribute in the lobby. Only candidates for Churchill County Commission, Assembly District 38 and State Senate District 17 will be speaking and answering questions because of time. Early voting for the primary runs from May 28 and ends June 10. The polls will be closed Memorial Day. • The Churchill County Clerk’s office has sent out sample ballots. If you did not receive one, call 775-423-6028. • The Clerk’s Office encourages voters to check their registration by contacting 775-423-6028 or elections@churchillcounty.org . Voters can also check their registration at https://www.nvsos.gov/votersearch/ • May 17 is the last day to register to vote, update registration or change party affiliation by mail or by appearing in person at the Churchill County Clerk’s offices. After that deadline, they may make any changes online at www.nvsos.gov. • May 18-May 27 – Online only voter registration, voter registration changes or party affiliation changes. www.RegisterToVoteNV.gov (If someone registers or updates their registration online during this time period, their ballot will be mailed to them) • May 28 – June 10, Commission chambers; June 14 at the convention center — Same day in-person registration, registration updates, or party affiliation changes at the Churchill County Clerk’s Office during vote center hours. Voters must provide a valid Nevada Driver’s License or Nevada Identification Card and proof of residency. • If you do not receive a ballot by May 27, or you need a replacement ballot, contact the Clerk’s Office at 775-423-6028. All requests for replacement ballots will be processed and mailed by 5 p.m., May 31. • The Commission chambers will serve as the only vote center for early voting. The actual general election date is June 14, and voting will be conducted at the Fallon Convention Center. Secure ballot drop boxes are located at both the Clerk’s Office and Recorder’s Office entrances. A drop box will be located at the north end of the county’s administration building and inside at the Fallon City Clerk’s office and Tribal Administration office on Rio Vista Drive.
