INITIAL STORY

The disappearance of Dayton resident Richard Shifflett, 74, who has been missing since Oct. 4, remains under active investigation by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.

Shifflett, a veteran who has suffered various health issues including dementia and a series of strokes, according to his brother Ronald Shifflett in Pennsylvania, has not responded to recent calls. LCSO deputies conducted a 5-mile radius search in Dayton with the help of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, according to a Facebook post. The area covered the Santa Maria Ranch, and the agencies used a drone with heat-seeking capabilities throughout the night. LCSO had issued a code red activation near Shifflett’s Andrea Way address and near the Carson River in Dayton.

Ronald Shifflett contacted the Nevada Appeal on Oct. 20 asking for information about his brother, saying he had reached out to officers at LCSO’s Dayton substation and had heard the area search on Oct. 4 was called off.

Ronald Shifflett said his brother has a daughter. According to the Facebook post, Richard Shifflett is 5 feet, 6 inches tall, weighs 170 pounds and is bald. He last was seen wearing a black T-shirt with a design and blue jeans. He left his residence on Andrea Way in Dayton between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and has not returned home.

The Appeal contacted Lyon County Sheriff Frank Hunewill on Oct. 20. Hunewill confirmed search and rescue crews found nothing pertaining to Shifflett and said there is no physical active search taking place but would put out an update when details are available.
