Dear readers, years ago we had an adorable yellow Lab named Baby who ran out the front door and got lost. We spent hours looking for her.

Nowadays with modern technology, we would have been able to use a GPS system that collaborated with our phone and problem solved. How do GPS dog and cat trackers work? It depends on the type of tracker you have. The main types are cellular, radio, mixed, and Bluetooth.

Cellular trackers have a built-in GPS chip that determines your pet’s location by transmitting information from satellites. To do this, they measure the distance between the GPS chip and the nearest satellite. The signal then bounces off cellular towers sending coordinates directly to your phone, which shows the location on a map.

Radio trackers use a handheld transceiver instead of an app to get GPS coordinates.

The transceiver sends signals to the pet’s collar. GPS technology then pinpoints the pet’s location on a map. If there is no GPS chip, it will display the position in distance and direction. This is a good choice for areas with poor cellular reception.

Mixed trackers are the newest GPS technology available. Using a module with a GPS chip connected to your pet’s collar, it transmits location via radio waves and then connects to cell phones. They do not need a separate SIM card or cellular service to work.

If you have small pets, Bluetooth is a good choice. However, Bluetooth has the shortest range of all the trackers.

Whatever system fits your need, you can rest assured knowing where your fur baby is.
