Fallon’s Steven Moon returned a kickoff for a touchdown and had one touchdown reception in the team’s 41-0 win over South Tahoe on Saturday.
A week after its game against Truckee was cancelled due to poor air quality, the Greenwave football team took advantage of clear skies Saturday night, winning its second game of the year.
Fallon defeated South Tahoe, 41-0, on the road to improve to 2-1 on the season. This week’s game against Dayton is a forfeit due to the Dust Devils not having enough players. Fallon’s next game, unless it can find an opponent to replace Dayton, is next week when the Greenwave travels to Spring Creek.
“We were pretty pleased to come out and play pretty well,” Fallon coach Brooke Hill said. “We still made some mistakes. That’s the hard part about missing games: you don’t get that time on the field. The kids executed, especially knowing the situation of not being outside. We not only missed the game last week, but we didn’t have a normal practice schedule this week.”
Since Fallon’s last game – a 58-6 win over Sparks on Sept. 2 – smoke from the Mosquito Fire in the Sierras spread into the region, resulting in canceled or rescheduled games, and forced schools to modify practice schedules and locations. For Fallon, Hill said the team had to practice indoors most of the past week.
If the South Tahoe game would have been canceled, coupled with the Dayton forfeit, Fallon could have gone into next week’s Spring Creek game with no games for nearly a month.
“We were real concerned about that, so it was big to get the game in,” Hill said. “(This week) We have to find a way to get better without having a game. We’ll start working on some Spring Creek stuff and probably give them one day off during the week, rest up and work on classroom stuff. We’ve had bye weeks before with playoffs and other scenarios.”
Against South Tahoe on his birthday, Fallon senior Steven Moon took the opening kickoff back to the end zone for 88 yards, setting the tone for the night.
After the defense forced a three-and-out in its first series, Fallon junior Carter Paul returned the punt for 43 yards and a touchdown, giving Fallon a pair of special teams scores in the first quarter. Ahead 13-0 going into the second quarter, junior quarterback found Moon for a 67-yard touchdown on the first play as Fallon increased its lead to three possessions.
Moon finished the night with three catches for 77 yards, Paul had four catches for 34 yards, junior Ethan Tarner finished with three receptions for 37 yards and junior Baylor Sandberg had 15 yards on two catches.
“Our passing game was right on,” Hill said of Adams, who finished 11 of 13 for 152 yards. “(Bryce) was really efficient.”
Fallon switched to the ground for its final two scores of the first half.
“We ran the ball effectively when wanted to. Defensively, we got the shutout and did a good job,” Hill said.
Senior Tristan Hill scored from 1 yard out to give Fallon a 27-0 lead. In at quarterback, junior Brady Alves ran into the end zone for a 6-yard score as the Greenwave led 34-0 going into halftime.
Hill’s 2-yard run in the third quarter resulted in a running clock, allowing the second team to see playing time on both sides of the ball. Newcomer junior Cesar Gonzalez Ledesma was successful in five of six PAT attempts.
Hill led a shared running attack that turned in 140 total yards. Hill finished with 44 yards on 11 carries while seniors Everdmar Garcia and Jose Ruiz, and junior Roland Grondin also ran the ball.
