The Fallon boys golf team had its best showing of the season and it happened to come on its home course April 19.

The Greenwave finished fourth out of 10 teams with a score of 386 as Truckee won its first tournament of the year with a 337. Fernley finished second at 353 followed by Elko in third with 373.

Truckee’s Luke Brown was the low medalist with a score of 77.

Three Greenwave golfers finished with scores in the double digits, starting with Ron Lee, who carded an 89. Lucas Durfee was second on the team with a 94 followed by Colin Shishido at 99. Drake Reid finished with a 104, followed by Wyatt Sorensen at 122 and Daniel Lords at 128. Lords’ score was excluded from the team score.

Fallon finished sixth in Winnemucca on April 18 with 403 points. Fernley won the tournament with a score of 341 followed by Truckee, 353, and Elko, 367.

Lee led the team as the only one to score under 100, finishing with a 94, followed by Durfee with a 101. Shishido scored a 103 followed by Reid at 105 and Lords 106. Kylan Sorensen carded a 109, which didn’t count in the team score.

Low medalist honors went to Lowry’s Landon Esquivel, who finished with a 79.


Bighorns baseball sweeps Lyon County schools

The Oasis Academy baseball team went undefeated last week, beating Silver Stage, 15-1, and sweeping Yerington’s JV team in a doubleheader, 11-7 and 11-6.

Oasis Academy, which is playing its first season, isn’t eligible for the postseason but improved to 10-3.

In last Monday’s win over Silver Stage, the Bighorns broke open the game with a 10-run fourth inning after being tied for the first two innings.

Sophomore Zachary Budner and freshmen Matthew Bird and Ryder McNabb each had three hits, including a double. Bird and Budner each drove in four runs, and Budner was a home run shy of the cycle. Freshman Trevor Barrenchea and McNabb each had two RBIs, and junior Sebastian Gomez Holguin, and sophomores Josh Gusewelle and Fenn Mackedon each had an RBI.

Budner pitched three innings of shutout ball, striking out six and allowing only one hit. Bird threw two innings and struck out four but issued three walks.

Oasis Academy came from behind to beat Yerington’s JV team in the first game on Saturday, 11-7, scoring four runs in the eighth and extra inning.

Freshman James Thibodaux, Barrenchea, Gusewelle and McNabb each had three hits, and McNabb led the team with three RBIs and a double. Freshman Kayden White and Thibodaux each drove in two, and Budner and Mackedon each had an RBI.

A trio of pitchers contributed to the win with White going two innings and Mackedon and McNabb each threw three innings. McNabb led the team with five strikeouts and no earned runs.

In the nightcap, the Bighorns scored five runs in the seventh to break a 6-6 tie.

Gusewelle drove in five on four hits, including a home run, and Bird had four hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs. White doubled twice and drove in one, and McNabb had three hits, including two doubles. Budner drove in one run.

Bird started on the hill, going three innings and giving up five earned runs, before Budner came in to pitch a shutout in the final four innings while striking out four.

The Lady Bighorns softball team fell to Pyramid Lake, 13-2, last Tuesday in Nixon before posting a pair of forfeits against Wells.

Oasis Academy sits 6-4 in the 1A North, three games behind Smith Valley (9-1) for first. Oasis Academy travels to Smith Valley this week for a pair of games.

In last week’s 11-run loss to Pyramid Lake, the Bighorns kept the game close after two innings, trailing only 2-1. But the Lakers scored 10 runs in the third and added another in the fourth to end the game due to the mercy rule.

Sophomore Lorena Rios led the team with a single and triple, while sophomore Taylynn Maynez and freshman Dahilia Creer each had an RBI. Junior Enede Rios, sophomore Kaylin Guthrie and freshmen Serenity Law and Grace Laca each had a single.

Sophomore Kristen Detamosi pitched four innings, giving up four earned runs, seven hits and nine walks. She struck out six.


Fallon boys track sixth in Winnemucca

The Fallon boys track and field team finished sixth in Saturday’s meet in Winnemucca.

Elko won the 13-team meet with 245 points followed by Lowry in second with 100. Fallon amassed 26.5 points. The Lady Wave finished ninth out of 12 teams with 13 points as Elko won it over Lowry, 199-168.

Fallon competes in Truckee on Saturday for the final regular-season meet. The regional trials are next week followed by the finals in two weeks at Reed. The state meet is May 19-20 in Las Vegas.
