(James, continued) While in Salt Lake, he is understood to have incurred the displeasure of Brigham Young (we are not at liberty to relate the particulars) and on his return to “Dutch Nicks” on the Carson River, declined a re-election. Since the discovery of the Comstock his career is well known to most of our readers. He will remain in White Pine some days. — Inland Empire (Hamilton, Nev.)

After backing and filling for some time the winter set in dead earnest yesterday, with a windy snowstorm, which lasted nearly all day. It’s thought that this is only the advance advent of a big Norther that will about cover up the down. Of course, this information about the weather, carries no new information to Carson people, but it is read with great interest by the Appeal subscribers in England, India and the southern states.

Majah Duncan R. Hawason, the reputed multi-millionaire mining magnate of New York came in from Goldfield last evening. The Majah came here previous to election with the avowed intention of opening up the eyes of the people of Nevada and three his entire strength to the cause of Mr. Yerington as against Mr. Van Duzer for congress.

Drowned in Lake Bigler. Three men, Alfred Woodcock, John Smith and a Frenchman named Frank who used to work as a cook at Spooner’s Ranch, were drowned a few days since in Lake Bigler by the capsizing of a boat.

Shortly before noon yesterday, Dr. Fox, one of the oldest physicians in the state, died at his residence. His demise was quite unexpected as he was feeling as well as ever the day before. Dr. J.W. Fox was born in Milton, Pa., 82 years ago the twenty-ninety of December.

Carson City’s Christmas season will officially begin Saturday when Gov. Grant Sawyer throws the switch at 6 p.m. to illuminate the community Yule tree. The town will be alerted to the event at two minutes to the hour by the fire whistle. A moment later Carson City will become a city of darkened. All streetlights will dim, and the city will turn inward for a moment of prayer.

The people who compile statistics on public and private land ownership in Nevada admitted they could be untold thousands of acres off, and the counties may be hurt financially by the errors. Pam Wilcox, administrator of the Nevada Division of State Lands, said any federal funding programs based on public and private land ownership figures would be “haywire” because the numbers could be so far off from the truth.

Snow sheds. There have been 125 carpenters employed for some time past in building snow sheds for the Union Pacific Railroad. It is expected that seven miles of the snow sheds will be completed by the 1st of February.

Sheriff Ricardo and Deputy Sheriff Reid were yesterday scouring the country around in search of Frank Brown, who escaped from the Winnemucca jail. The Indians tracked the fugitive to the Bliss ranch, about 12 miles from town. The officers gave chase near Stone House, 40 miles east of this place and brought him back to town.

They are showing some new Xmas goods, in French Stag, Pyralin, Ebody and Celluloid at Kitzmeyer’s Drug Store. Also, a large assortment of American and imported perfumes in holiday packages.

Hopes that the Carson High School band might march in the Presidential Inaugural parade in Washington, D.C., flickered wanly today — but were not completely extinguished. Late yesterday it appeared necessary funds couldn’t be raised in time.
