Fallon’s American Legion Fred W. Anderson Post 16 needs volunteers for its Christmas meals outreach.

According to Paul “Pip” Valentin, the post and its volunteers prepares, packs and delivers meals to the county’s seniors as well as opening its dining room to the community for a homemade Christmas meal. On Thanksgiving and Christmas every year, the Meals on Wheels program administered by the William N. Pennington Life Center gives its employees the holiday off, and the American Legion and its volunteer step up to fill the void.

“For Thanksgiving, Post 16 delivered 141 meals to the community and served 81 out of the post,” Valentin said. “Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen. But we need volunteers to help prep before Christmas and the day of the event.”

Valentin said volunteers should come to the Post at 90 N. Ada St., on Christmas morning. Volunteer times are between 8:30-11:30 a.m.

Valentin said the need for volunteers is more than what the post had for Thanksgiving. He said many personnel are able to take additional leave over the Christmas holiday. Volunteers assist the William N. Pennington Life Center by delivering meals to the county’s elderly population who either live within the city limits or reside in the county.

A sit-down dinner for the community is from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Residents and military personnel assigned to Naval Air Station Fallon and the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center who wish to sign up as volunteers should contact paul.valentin470@gmail.com.

During previous years at Christmas, Valentin said volunteers have included school teachers, community leaders, ranchers and business owners or employees.

Valentin said the post is accepting turkey and ham donations and will begin accepting pie donations on Dec 21.
