Churchill County School District Trustee Matt Hyde, Work-Based Learning Coordinator Sue Segura and Administrative Clerical Aide Selena Gomes received individual awards at the annual Nevada Association of School Boards conference on Dec. 7 at Reno’s Grand Sierra Resort.

“Churchill County School District is proud of the many individuals that work together to support the education of our students,” said Superintendent Derild Parsons. “We are grateful for the recent recognition by the Nevada Association of School Boards for their acknowledgment of three individuals from Churchill County School District who dedicate their time and talents to this work.

“Congratulations Trustee Matt Hyde, Selena Gomes, and Dr. Sue Segura. Their efforts make a difference in the lives of our students, staff, and families.”

During Hyde’s decade of work in public education, the NASB Veteran School Board Member-of-the-Year recipient has served as president and vice president of the board. He was also a member of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association Board of Control, the Churchill County Debt Management Commission and numerous safety committees.

A longtime employee of CC Communications, Hyde stepped down from the school board in November after a successful run for the Churchill County Commission. He will begin his term as the District 1 representative in January.

“There are certainly some amazing trustees across the state so to be selected was a surprise and humbling,” Hyde said. “I could have never accomplished anything without the awesome trustees I was blessed to work with. I learned so much from each one of them. Every trustee I worked with was student-centered and focused on student achievement.”

According to his nomination packet, Hyde’s most valuable contributions are not that apparent to the “naked eye.”

“His boardmanship, his commitment to teamwork and adherence to the roles and responsibilities of a school board trustee make Hyde a veteran board member worth recognition,” stated the recommendation.

Furthermore, Hyde was also cited for helping to lead the school district back from the coronavirus pandemic.

“Hyde proved to be a voice of reason, empathy and prioritizing the needs of students above all else,” the recommendation cited

In addition to his years on the school board, Hyde has spent more than 20 years coaching youth sports.

Segura received the NASB District-Level Administrator of the Year Impacting Student Achievement award. A dedicated educator with 40 years of experience, she is known in the community for her no-nonsense, get-it-done attitude.

In her current position, Segura said her goal is to ensure each school-district student has a clear career pathway. She has established local business partnerships with paid internships for high school students. Her leadership has led to a 40% increase in students receiving tuition-free education at Nevada junior colleges through the Nevada Promise scholarship. Successful applications to the University of Nevada, Reno have also tripled under her guidance.

Beyond her professional achievements, Segura said that she values being a supportive presence in her students’ lives, cheering them on and helping them to navigate their educational and personal challenges.

“This is my biggest honor in education,” Segura said of the award. “I have always worked for our kids. I always want what is best for kids.”

Gomes was awarded the NASB Board Secretary or Administrative Assistant or Other Board Support Staff Person of the Year.

“We truly value Selena and the phenomenal work she does to support us, our students, parents, employees and superintendent,” the Churchill County Board of Trustees collectively said in her nomination letter. “We could not do the work we do without her and want to recognize her for her outstanding service.”

Often the first face and voice of the district for incoming families, Gomes was recognized as a key player in the district for being extremely organized and detail-oriented as well as for her kindness and empathy.

“I am honored and grateful for the recognition and award,” Gomes said. “It is a pleasure working for Superintendent Parsons and the Board of Trustees.”
