Most of us who have been around a while remember those words from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical, “The Sound of Music.”
They are followed by the Von Trapp children singing, “Auf wierderseh’n, adieu to yieu and yieu and yieu!!” I also remember another famous quote but had no idea it was from a poem by Geoffrey Chaucer in 1374 until I looked it up online.
“All good things must come to an end.” After more than 50 years as a minister in Carson City, I have retired. I am writing this article to say thank you to this wonderful community. I appreciate the fact that I have been privileged to visit you in the hospital as well as in jail and prison or when called to your home.
It has been awesome to write articles for the newspaper and to lead prayers for the state Legislature and the Carson City Board of Supervisors.
It has been an honor to pray with local pastors and to speak at the National Day of Prayer as well as the 9/11 remembrance service. I have rejoiced with those I have married, and I have cried with the families of those who have been buried.
So, what shall be my final words in this paper? Well, the word “remember” occurs over 200 times in the Bible. One of them completely catches my attention.
“Remember God before your life is snapped like a silver chain. Remember God before your life is broken like a golden bowl. It will be as useless as a broken bucket at the spring. It will be no good, like a broken wheel at a water well.” Ecclesiastes 12:6
I conclude with St. Peter’s last written words. “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” 2 Peter 3:18
