Do you know someone with Parkinson’s disease? Do you have PD yourself? Are you aware of the common symptoms? Do you know the options for help in our region?
Over 5,000 people live with Parkinson’s disease in northern Nevada, and there are over 90,000 new diagnoses each year in the U.S. Parkinson’s disease is the fastest-growing neurodegenerative disease in the world. While it is often thought of as an “old person’s disease,” PD affects people of all ages, with 10% of cases diagnosed under the age of 50.
Parkinson’s Disease: What you should know
Parkinson’s disease occurs when brain cells that produce dopamine—a chemical responsible for coordinating movement — begin to die. This loss of dopamine disrupts movement and coordination, leading to symptoms like tremors, slowness, stiffness, walking difficulty, and balance issues. There are also symptoms that are less visible, such as small handwriting, depressed mood, constipation, soft voice and many others.
Although there is no cure for Parkinson’s, the disease can be managed through medication and exercise. However, not all symptoms can be addressed by medications alone. It’s essential to build a supportive network of healthcare professionals, as treatment often requires a team effort. The goal is to improve quality of life, enhance mobility, and maintain mental sharpness.
The Parkinson Support Center of Northern Nevada: A lifeline for the community
The Parkinson Support Center of Northern Nevada is the only local organization dedicated to supporting those affected by Parkinson’s disease. PSCNN offers programs, education, and advocacy to help those living with PD. Their vision is simple: “No one has to face Parkinson’s disease alone.”
PSCNN provides various services, including PD community groups where patients and caregivers can share experiences and hear from experts.
The center also offers a Mentor Program that pairs newly diagnosed individuals with someone who has lived with the disease. In addition, their helpline offers information about local resources and support services.
PSCNN is also producing a series of videos featuring local people’s stories about living with Parkinson’s. These videos can be accessed on PSCNN’s YouTube channel and their website, www.pscnn.org.
Educational programming and annual events
Learning about Parkinson’s is critical for living well with the disease. PSCNN provides educational programming almost every month, covering topics ranging from new medical research to nutritional advice and legal considerations.
These programs are geared to individuals with PD and caregivers. PSCNN also provides in-service training healthcare professionals and an introduction to Parkinson’s presentation for the general public. Additionally, the center hosts an annual Movement and Wellness Fair each fall, bringing together exercise providers, therapists, and other services that help people with PD maintain their mobility.
