Carson T&F dominates home meet

Carson High School track and field won the boys and girls sides of their home league meet Wednesday against Reed and Bishop Manogue.

The Senator girls dominated, putting up 85 points to Bishop Manogue’s 41.

On the boys side, Carson (43 points) edged Bishop Manogue (42) for first. Reed was third with 38.5 team points.

Freshman Madison Kruger won the 200-meter dash in a personal record of 28.12. Saule Astronomo, who was third in the 200, won the 400 meters in 1:03.94, setting a PR. Kruger went on to win the triple jump with a mark of 31 feet, 8 inches and take second in the long jump (14-3.5).

The Senators took the top three spots in the 800 between Vea Miner (2:31.44), Nastasia Sulprizio (2:34.66) and Hannah Budd (2:34.85).

Budd won the 1,600 in 5:52.10, slightly ahead of Sulprizio (5:52.33).

Miner and Jinnie Ponczoch went 1-2 in the 3,200.

Anne Davis won the 100-meter hurdles (16:30) and took fourth in the 100-meter dash (13.54). Davis won the long jump at 15 feet, 8.75 inches.

Astronomo, Lillian Turner, Mara Kuchnicki and Allison Peachay put together a 52.51 in the 4x100 relay to win.

Emjae Salanoa won the discus with a throw of 97 feet, 9 inches and took second in the shot put with a mark of 30-10.

Sophomore Julie Salanoa was third in the shot put (30-8) and third in the discus (78-8), setting a personal record.

Freshmen Claire Billings and Emery Cooper were third in the high jump and pole vault, respectively.

On the boys side, Jaren Thornburg won the 400-meter dash in 53.27, setting a PR.

Alex Miner won the 800 in 2:08.78 while Sean Thornton took home the top spot in the 1,600 in 4:39.77.

The Senators completed the distance sweep with the three best finishes in the 3,200 between Thornton (10:54.67), Quinn Kuchnicki (11:14.01) and Seth Chalmers (11:16.74).

The Senators’ 4x400 relay team – Sylis Chalmers, Zackery Eaton, Kekoa Mitchell and Thornburg – won in 3:47.07.

Mitchell won the discus, firing a 137-9, and was fourth in the 200 in a PR of 23.54.

Eaton was third in the high jump with a clearance of 5-8.

Junior Aaron Linehan was fourth in the shot put with a PR of 40-8.5.

Senior Aaron Witt won the triple jump with a mark of 38-4.


DOUGLAS SOFTBALL WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT

The Tiger softball team (16-5, 7-1 in Class 5A North league play) bested McQueen (9-8, 3-3) on Tuesday, 10-1.

Senior Cam McLelland hit a two-run homer in the first inning before singling three times.

McLelland ended the game 4-for-4 with three RBI.

Her first inning home run was followed three batters later by freshman Hailee Lister’s two-run homer to center field. Lister finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

Annie Hill went 2-for-4 with a double. Cam Coats also doubled while Haylie Pledger went 2-for-5 with an RBI.

McLelland struck out 10 hitters while allowing no earned runs and five hits.


CARSON BASEBALL FALLS TO SPANISH SPRINGS

Carson High baseball (5-13, 2-7 in Class 5A North league play) and Spanish Springs (14-6, 5-2) were locked in a 0-0 tie through seven innings Tuesday but the Cougars’ bats broke out in the eighth.

Spanish Springs scored seven times to win 7-1.

Junior Ethan Cook went 2-for-4 while freshman Lucas LaFollette had a base hit and an RBI.

Senior Will Raggett pitched seven innings and did not allow a run while conceding four hits. He struck out five Cougars in a no-decision.

UP NEXT: The Senators traveled to Galena (8-7, 3-4) on Thursday before going to Bishop Manogue (16-4, 7-0) today.


CHS SOFTBALL STUMBLES AGAINST DAMONTE RANCH

The Mustangs (2-9, 1-5 in Class 5A North league play) scored 10 runs in the first three innings en route to a 13-9 win over Carson High softball (8-8-1, 4-4) on Tuesday.

The Senators made eight errors.

Lillian Barker and Ari Gallardo-Yanez both went 4-for-4 as Barker doubled twice and Gallardo-Yanez knocked in four RBIs.

Sofia Morrison went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Elizabeth Barker, Riley Kuhlman and Cali Stagliano all plated a run.

UP NEXT: The Senators get a week off before traveling to Spanish Springs (12-7-1, 4-1) for a doubleheader April 19.


TIGER TRACK THIRD IN LEAGUE MEET

Douglas High track and field was third in the boys and girls team scores Wednesday against Reno and Galena.

Grace Strabala-Karosich won the 400 in 1:00.32 while Katelyn Coons took home the top spot in the 100-meter (16.60) and 300-meter hurdles (49.30). Strabala-Karosich was second in the long jump with a mark of 16 feet, 5.25 inches.

Anna Patmont, Alexsa Reyes, Bryani Ono and Strabala-Karosich put together the quickest time in the 4x100 relay with a 51.27.

Rachel Girdner, Kendall Cole, Azalyn Vasey and Strabala-Karosich finished second in the 4x400 (4:17.93). Vasey, a freshman, finished in third in the triple jump (31-8.75).

Douglas’ 4x800 relay team was also second (10:44.47) with Lucy Nord, Ayla Nelson, Ella Peterlin and Krystle Dixon.

Kailynn Dollar was second on the shot put (27-0.25) and third in the discus (77-3).

Malena Van Wagenen (4-8) was third in the high jump while Stella White took third in the pole vault (11-6).

Luke Davis led the Douglas boys with a win in the 800 in a personal record of 2:01.82.

Junior Colton Hartline was second in the 200 in 23.69, setting a PR.

Junior Darryl Hinkle and senior Braden Lenz were third and fourth in the 100-meter dash in 11.63 and 11.64, respectively. Hartline was fifth in 11.65.

Douglas’ 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams took second place.

The Tigers’ 4x100 team of Andrew Groves, Logan Rippi, Ethan Hauser and Tyler Collins finished in 45.44.

In the 4x400, Hartline, Davis, Zak Weddell and Hinkle put together a time of 3:39.22.

It was Francsco Gallegos-Graciano, Kyndall McGuire, Gabriel Barrington and Noah Johnson stopping the clock in 10:00.16 in the 4x800.

Justin Parra-McGee took third in the shot put with a throw of 42 feet.

Alex Winter, a junior, was second in the discus with a throw of 119-9, a season best.
