Sierra Lutheran baseball takes series from Incline

Several area track and field athletes PR at Northwest Invite

The Sierra Lutheran High School baseball team (7-14-1, 5-13 in Class 2A North league play) lost a pitcher’s dual in the April 15 series-opener against Incline (5-12, 5-12), 4-2, but bounced back with two wins in shootout fashion in Thursday’s doubleheader, winning 15-5 and 13-11.

The Falcons fell behind 3-0 in the first half of the doubleheader, but responded with five runs in the second inning.

Sophomore Matt Fahey ended the contest 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBIs.

Freshman Noah Ramirez was 3-for-5 with three RBIs while Grayson Ricks, Shaun Castro and Anton Granata all had two RBIs.

Ricks threw all six innings while recording five strikeouts and allowing five hits.

Sierra Lutheran also rallied in the second game, trailing 7-0 and 10-7 after the first and fourth innings.

In the second inning, the Falcons responded with seven runs, tying the game, 7-7 through two.

In the top of the fifth, Sierra Lutheran turned a 10-7 deficit into a 13-10 lead.

Fahey had two more doubles and two more RBIs for the Falcons.

Senior Drew Gleiser went 1-for-4, and drove in a pair of RBIs.

Ricks, Castro, Ramirez, Granata, Tristan Dries and Shiloh Rittweger all tallied an RBI.

UP NEXT: Sierra Lutheran began a three-game series with Pershing County (5-16, 3-14) on Tuesday. The Falcons and the Mustangs will conclude the series with a Saturday doubleheader in Lovelock.


DAYTON BASEBALL WINS SERIES OVER ELKO

The Dayton High baseball team (10-12, 3-9) took 2-of-3 contests from Elko (13-13, 7-5) last weekend, dropping the opener, 9-3, then rallying with wins of 8-6 and 19-15.

Adrian Acosta went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI in the first game Saturday.

Senior Ryan Frank drove in two RBIs while Jacob Jeffcoat and Viliami Tulimafua-Curran each plated an RBI.

In the second half of the doubleheader, Dayton did not score a run in the first three innings before exploding for 19 runs in the fourth through the seventh innings.

Brody Dupuy and Travis Gardner had three RBIs each. Beau Walker drove in a pair of runs.

UP NEXT: The Dust Devils conclude their regular season this weekend against Lowry (10-13, 5-7). Friday will be the first game of the series while Saturday will feature a doubleheader in Dayton, starting at 11 a.m.


CARSON SOFTBALL FALLS TWICE TO COUGARS

The Spanish Springs High School softball team (17-7-1, 9-1 in Class 5A North league play) held its second spot in the Class 5A North league standings with a doubleheader sweep of Carson (8-10-1, 3-6) last weekend.

The Cougars won 9-3 and 11-1.

Riley Kuhlman tripled in the opening game and drove in an RBI while Jordan Brubaker and Sofia Morrison both went 2-for-3. Brubaker doubled and scored two runs while Morrison plated an RBI.

Ari Gallardo-Yanez also knocked in a run in the front end of the doubleheader.

Gallardo-Yanez went 2-for-2 with a run scored in the second contest.

Morrison had the Senators’ lone extra-base hit in the 11-1 loss.

Kiele Franco plated Gallardo-Yanez for Carson’s only run of the game.

UP NEXT: The Senators will be back in action Thursday at McQueen (15-11, 6-5) before traveling to Reed (20-3-1, 9-0) for a Saturday doubleheader starting at 9 a.m.


ELKO SOFTBALL SWEEPS DAYTON

Elko High softball (15-12, 5-7 in Class 3A North league play) got the better of Dayton (10-17, 1-11) in all three matchups of their series.

Elko won 5-0, 13-2 and 7-6.

LaSade Conti went 3-for-3 in game one for Dayton and struck out 10 in six innings. Conti went 2-for-3 at the plate in the opener of the doubleheader and 1-for-4 with two RBIs in the latter half.

In the final game of the series Madison Cleland, Macie Hannum and Esmeralda Hernandez all had two hits.

UP NEXT: Dayton will conclude its regular season at home against Lowry (22-6, 11-1) with a three-game series, beginning Friday afternoon. Saturday will be a doubleheader at 11 a.m.

CARSON, SIERRA LUTHERAN, DAYTON T&F AT NORTHWEST INVITE

Carson High track and field traveled to McQueen High last weekend to compete in the Northwest Invite along with Dayton and Sierra Lutheran.

Anne Davis took second place in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.45 while Mara Kuchnicki was fourth in 17.32 for the Senators.

Davis took sixth in the long jump with a mark of 15 feet, 7 inches.

Senator freshman Madison Krueger was fifth in the triple jump with a personal record of 32-3.5.

Carson’s Sean Thornton (2:04.32) and Jaren Thornburg (2:06.39) were sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 800 meters.

The Senator boys 4x800 relay team of Sawyer Macy, Alex Miner, Thornburg and Thornton finished third in 8:20.78.

Senator senior discus thrower Kekoa Mitchell was sixth with a toss of 136-10.

Sierra Lutheran’s Kayla Carpenter was fifth in the shot put at 30-3. Junior Sydney Sufka was sixth in the pole vault, clearing 9-6.

Carson (14 points) was 17th on the boys side while Sierra Lutheran (12 points) was 18th and Dayton (8) was 21st.

In the boys shot put, Falcon senior Michael Miles registered a PR toss of 49-2.5 to take third place. He also PR’d in the discus with a throw of 123-2 to take 15th.

Dayton senior Rhys Evans set a PR in the pole vault, clearing 14 feet to finish second.

Sophomore Madison Tinsley cleared 4-11 to take third and set a personal record in the high jump.

The Senator girls took 14th with 21 points. Sierra Lutheran was 18th with 12 points and Dayton was 19th with 11 points.
