The Oasis Academy girls and boys basketball teams won Saturday’s Battle of the Ore Cart against Coral Academy at the city-county gym.

The annual rivalry game, which is based on the total scores from both games, saw the Bighorns take this year’s trophy with a combined score of 89-52.

“In our first meeting at Coral, the game came down to the final two minutes of the game with us coming out on top by nine points,” Oasis Academy boys basketball coach Don Schank said. “This game was completely different with our largest crowd of this season cheering us on, taking the game and retaining the Ore Cart.”

Oasis Academy closes out the regular season this week at Pershing County on Tuesday, at home against Incline on Wednesday and at Sierra Lutheran on Saturday.

The boys team (3-11, 2A North) was eliminated from playoff contention, but the girls (6-9) sit in sixth and would qualify if they finish in the top half of the league.

Saturday’s 45-28 win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Oasis Academy boys, who last won Feb. 21 at Coral Academy in Reno.

Oasis jumped out to a 15-2 lead in the first quarter and led by 19 points at halftime.

Senior Fenn Mackedon, who became the school’s first to score 1,000 points two weeks ago, led the team with 26 points, including a trio of 3s, on 61 percent shooting from the floor. Junior Trevor Barrenchea scored 12 points. Junior Austin Thibodaux led the team in rebounds with 12 boards, Mackedon had a team-high four steals, and Barrenchea led in assists with four and blocks with three.

After trailing by three in the first quarter, Oasis Academy fell into a bigger hole when the Lakers outscored the visitors by 14 in the middle quarters on Tuesday. Down by as many as 17 in the fourth quarter, the Bighorns cut the deficit to six with two minutes left in the game before North Tahoe sealed the win.

Mackedon finished with a team-high 33 points, including four treys, on 67 percent shooting, and Barrenchea added eight points and a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore Eli Jones led in assists with three, Barrenchea and freshman Jackson Snow each had two steals, and Barrenchea also had a pair of blocks.
