As we continue to explore destinations off the beaten path best seen via comfortable cruise ships, yachts, or riverboats, we found a very special trip we know will appeal to naturalists, cultural anthropologists, adventurers, culinary enthusiasts, thrill seekers, photographers, spiritualists, and even the consummate leisure cruiser who loves seeing unusual and interesting sites.

In our continuing quest to find countries and regions best seen on guided tours, we have added a most amazing river cruise to our travel lineup for 2026.

Affectionally referred to as the “Mother of Water,” the Mekong River, one of the most important rivers in the world, boasts the world's largest freshwater fish not seen in the U.S. or outside of Southeast Asia.

Many may never have heard of the giant freshwater stingray, giant barb, giant pangasius, seven-striped bard, giant wallago catfish, and goonch catfish. The river also is home to the critically endangered fresh-water Irrawaddy dolphins and giant soft-shell turtles.

Teeming with marine life, over 1,000 fish species swim within the Mekong River. The World Wildlife Fund refers to the Mekong River as a “treasure trove” for seeing rare birds, fish, plants, mammals and more.

The best way to see the pristine forests, ancient temples and local villages, is via a boutique Emerald cruise in the winter months. January and February is reputed to be warm and dry with daytime temperatures in the 80s and evening temps in the mid-60s.

Our departure dates are Jan. 6 and Jan. 28, a perfect beginning to kick off the new year. The luxurious Star-Ship Emerald Harmony will transport travelers between Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in Vietnam to Siem Reap in Cambodia on a seven-night cruise.

The approximately 168-mile river voyage features what some refer to as “the most exotic terrains in the world.” Although the cruise is seven nights, the full Mayflower Tours & Cruises cultural experience will be 12 nights with hotel stays of two nights in Saigon and three nights in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

The cruise journey between Saigon and Siam Reap will include multiple “EmeraldPlus” cultural experiences (on and off the ship). Included in the 12-night per person cost are 31 meals, complimentary wine/beer/soft drinks, free WI-FI, and local entertainment.

Gratuities, too, are included, which is really a nice feature. Now for the truly exciting news — the price includes FREE AIR from Reno (a $2,200 value) if booked by March 31; however, we recommend early booking since this is a small ship and bound to be sold out quickly. The 269 square foot Emerald Balcony Suite is $6,455 per person.

Reserve your stateroom today. The 42 cabin Emerald Harmony, built in 2019, was specifically designed to cruise the Mekong River allowing access to ports not open to other types of ships and is one of the few ships able to dock in the center of Saigon.

The ship accommodates 84 passengers in modern air-conditioned comfort attended by a crew of 40. There are two bars and lounges, and the elegant Reflections Restaurant features a la carte dinner menus focusing on Asian-inspired fare along with specialty-themed meals to add to the savory culinary journey.

There’s even a self-serve laundry, hairdresser, walking track, fitness area, and the entire Deck 6 is dedicated to a Sun Deck featuring 360 degree views.

Fill your senses! Pray at the world’s largest religious monument in Siem Reap, be thrilled by the flora and fauna (and those giant fish), savor the foods, and mingle with the charming natives.

Spend 12 nights being enchanted and pampered as you immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of Southeast Asia where local life has not changed for centuries in this culturally rich biodiversity hotspot.
