RENO – Douglas High School girls basketball was able to overcome a 45-41 deficit to force overtime Tuesday at Damonte Ranch, but the Mustangs outscored the Tigers 8-1 to win 54-47.
The Class 4A North league game held postseason implications. A Douglas win would’ve secured the No. 5 seed for the regional tournament.
However, the teams are now tied with record of 6-9 in league play with one game to go.
Douglas led by as much as 10 in the opening half, but the Mustangs chipped away to make it a four-point gap at intermission, 22-18.
Damonte took a 38-35 lead with 5:07 to go in regulation, but Douglas had a 5-0 run over the next minute to move in front, 40-38.
The brief run started when Giana Zinke found Madison Frisby for a bucket in the paint before Zinke stepped out on the wing for a 3-pointer off an assist from Hailee Koontz.
Out of a timeout, the Mustangs hit their own 3-pointer to go back in front by one, 41-40.
Inside the final minute Douglas trailed, 46-43.
Zinke hit one of two free throws, but Ashlyn Greenfield was able to snag a steal off the miss and, with a layup, tie the contest at 46-46.
Both sides had a possession inside of the final 30 seconds.
“That was the look that we wanted. She (Greenfield) got fouled for sure on the shot,” said Douglas head coach Jason Carter.
In overtime, the Tigers missed their first few shots as the Mustangs opened the extra period with a corner triple.
Douglas was forced to foul as time wound down, allowing Damonte Ranch to grow its lead to 53-46 with 90 seconds to play.
Koontz hit a free throw to make it 53-47, but its as close as the Tigers got to topping the Mustangs on their Senior Night.
