Murder at Empire. Yesterday morning a man named William A. Ducker was shot and killed by a Norwegian, or Dane by the name of George Price. We hear that the two men had a quarrel on Sunday over a game of cards.

To businessmen. The board of trustees of Carson City do hereby request all businessmen in Carson City to close their respective places of business on Monday, Feb. 15, 1885, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., or during the ceremony of inter ruing the remains of the soldiers from Fort Churchill, and that all citizens and all city officers are also requested to join in the proper observance of said ceremonies.

Parson Davis has introduced new music at the prison in addition to the organ. Last Sunday an instrumental quartet furnished the music. They accompanied the singing of the religious hymns during the service. The music was loudly appreciated.

Gov. Grant Sawyer was to meet today with southern Nevada Negro leaders in an attempt to facing those who claim they were “sold down the river” by his civil rights bill.

Sen. Paul Laxalt, R-Nev., said Tuesday the “chaos cannot be tolerated” at Lake Tahoe but he is going to get involved on way or another in a move to pull Nevada out of the bistate Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

Chinese seeking an English education. — Miss H.K. Clapp has a class of some 30 Chinese people who attend a night school at the Sierra Seminary each evening in the week. She and Miss Babcock and the more advanced their scholars teach these Celestials and find them very apt scholars.

Dust to Dust! Reinterring Nevada’s Unknown Dead. The ceremony of reinterring the remains of the soldiers who died in the early Indian wars of Nevada was performed yesterday with appropriate surroundings and an imposing military and civic display in this city. Out of respect for the event all business houses in Carson were closed, the Capitol flag hung at half-mast, and the population of this city united with the representatives of every town in the state to make the event memorable and striking.

Several days ago, Joe Ward, well known in this city, and who has been mining the Goldfield district was injured by a missed hole in the ground that he and his partners were working. While he was terribly injured, and it was thought he would lose his eyesight, it was not expected that his injuries would result in death. Last evening it was learned that the man was dying, and all hope was abandoned to saving his life.

Fire losses last year were more than $225,000, far above the greatest loss incurred in this area, according to Les Groth, fire chief. The heaviest single loss was the Copeland Lumber Yard which was set at $120,000. On Feb. 14, members of the Warren Engine Company No. 1 apprehended an arsonist who had been active in the area for many months. He was convicted of 17 counts of arson.

A Zephyr Cove man faces manslaughter charges while a Carson City man has been arrested for driving under the influence in separate traffic accidents at Stateline and Carson City which killed two persons Friday.

The debate last evening on the woman suffrage question was well attended by members of both the Adelphi and Nonpariel Clubs, and by the ladies and gentlemen of the city generally. Mr. Ellis opens in affirmative in a capital speech; Mr. Davies followed worth a highly amusing and facetious effort in the negative; Mr. Waits came next and delivered, well-conceived argument in the affirmative.

Gold bearing steer teeth are causing at excitement in Virginia. The steer in question is supposed to have drank at some gold spring near Truckee.

The Nevada Legislature, with Democrats controlling both houses for the first time in 28 years, opened its 53rd session today at noon. William D. Swackhammer named house leader.

A bill allowing governing bodies to meet in closed session with their legal counsel to discuss pending lawsuits was given tentative approval today by the Assembly Government Affairs Committee. A straw vote showed the committee approved the change to the open meeting law.
