A 12-0 run at the end of the third quarter was enough for Bishop Manogue girls basketball (8-8, 4-3 in Class 4A league play) to get past Carson Friday night.
The Senators led at half and into the third period, but the Miners were able to get rolling over the final 13 minutes, turning a tied contest (28-28) midway into the third quarter into a 54-44 win.
The Miners were able to grab an edge with a defensive adjustment, trapping Carson on offense and forcing Senator turnovers with on-ball pressure and double teams.
Sam Tolotti and Josie Williamson both had double figures in the second half for Manogue as it pulled away.
SEEING THE NEXT STEPS
Coming off a Wednesday night overtime win against Galena (7-9, 1-5) in which Carson scored a season-high 70 points, the Senators were once again able to show the strides they’ve made from a season ago.
Midway through the second quarter, trailing 14-13, sophomore captain Emjae Salanoa made a heads up play to get out of a jam by tossing the ball off an opponents’ leg and out of bounds to keep possession.
The ensuing inbounds play sophomore Abby Drysdale came off a screen to catch a bounce pass from Clarissa Quintana right underneath the rim.
Drysdale earned three points the hard way on an and-one chance, giving Carson a 16-14 advantage.
Salanoa, who ended the night with a team-high 11 points, followed by making a pair of free throws and Drysdale used a spin move in the lane before sinking another bucket to give Carson a 20-14 lead.
After a Miner turnover, senior Dahlia Keating capitalized on a loose ball, converting a layup and giving the Senators an eight-point lead, 22-14, with two minutes to play in the half.
Bishop Manogue cut it to four, 24-20, at the intermission.
“While we should feel good about a lead going into halftime, they (Bishop Manogue) are not a team that’s just going to back down,” said Golden. “They’ll make shots. They’re a good team, but how are we going to respond when those shots go down? … That’s something we are learning.”
In the third quarter, freshman Ashlan Smokey went behind her back as she stepped through the paint for a stylish layup.
A couple possessions later, Smokey drilled a 3-pointer to give Carson a 31-28 lead, but that was the last bucket for the Senators in the third period before the Miners jumped out in front. Smokey finished the contest with eight points.
With nine league games left to play, Carson is looking to prove it can handle late-game changes from its opponents.
The Senators ended the contest 9-of-19 from the free throw line as well.
“We’ve been in a lot of close games that I think could go either way and you just hope we make those adjustments mentally,” Golden said. “If anything, it shows our girls that they can be in a game with almost any team in the league.”
UP NEXT: Carson (6-9, 2-5 in Class 4A North league play) will head south to Minden on Monday to tangle with rival Douglas (7-8, 3-4).
