Tiger wrestling hits the mats in Spring Creek

Both Douglas High School wrestling teams went to Spring Creek for the annual Kiwanis Invitational last weekend.

On the girls side, the Tigers had three place winners led by Ella Kavanagh’s third place finish in the 100/105-pound bracket.

Kavanagh’s only loss came in the quarterfinal en route to a 5-1 record.

In the third place match, Kavanagh dispatched Fernley’s Tina Garcia by technical fall, 17-0.

Jasmine Tamondong took fourth place for the Tigers in the 110/115-pound bracket.

Tamondong went 4-2 in the tournament with wins by major decision, tech fall and two pins.

River Klein finished fifth in the same bracket.

The girls team was ninth with 44 points out of 32 teams that participated.

On the boys side, the Tigers were 16th out of 32 teams.

Cody Highfill was Douglas’ lone podium finisher with a second place result in the 120-pound bracket.

Highfill used three pins to get to the semifinal match, which he won by major decision, 11-0.

In the finale, Highfill fell by pin to Moapa Valley’s Morris Wolfley in 3:01.

At 126 pounds, Gunnar Bleeker went 4-2 with two wins by pin, one by injury default and a final consolation win by tech fall.

Vincent Cereghino (144 pounds) and Kolton Zinn (150) both secured 12 team points for Douglas.

Cereghino finished 3-2 with all three wins coming via pin while Zinn posted an identical 3-2 record with three wins by fall.

UP NEXT: Douglas hosted Carson and Bishop Manogue on Tuesday in a league triangular dual. It also served as the Tigers’ Senior Night.


REED OUTLASTS DOUGLAS GIRLS

The Reed Raiders, who sit atop the Class 4A North standings alongside Spanish Springs, got all it could handle Friday against Douglas.

Ultimately, the Raiders won 60-56 to move to 9-1 in Class 4A North league play.

Hailee Koontz led the way for the Tigers with 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Ashlyn Greenfield tallied 16 points with four rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Giana Zinke added 11 points for Douglas while Annie Hill and Kaylee Bradford finished with six and four, respectively.

Monday night, Douglas lost to Reno, 54-31. 

UP NEXT: Douglas (9-10, 5-6) will host Bishop Manogue (9-10, 6-4) Wednesday night. 


TIGER BOYS BASKETBALL REMAINS RED-HOT

Douglas High boys basketball has won five of six to open 2025.

The only loss came in overtime against the top team in the Northern 4A, Spanish Springs.

Friday against Reed, Douglas claimed an 81-65 win.

Seven Tigers had at least eight points in the win while five had 10-plus points.

Senior guard Caden Thacker led the way with 19 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Evan Tolbert and Trent Ipsen put up 12 points each while Tolbert snagged nine rebounds and Ipsen dished out five assists.

Noah Kizer tallied 11 points to go with Daron Kizer’s 10 points.

Jesse Messick and Noah Coyne posted nine and eight points, respectively.

Douglas had 18 assists and forced 15 steals.

On Monday, the Tigers slipped against Reno in falling to the Huskies, 50-34.

UP NEXT: Douglas (10-9, 7-4) welcomed Bishop Manogue (11-8, 7-3) to Minden Wednesday night.
