The Greenwave wrestling team competed in its final tournament last weekend. The postseason is around the corner.
Fallon finished 10th out of 32 boys teams and 11th out of 32 girls teams in the two-day Kiwanis tournament in Spring Creek.
Moapa Valley won the boys division with 245.5 points, edging two-time 3A state champion Elko by 3.5 points. Lowry Blue finished fifth with 201.5 points and Fallon came in at 138.5 points to round out the top 10. Caldwell (Idaho) won the girls division with 115 points. Fallon finished with 31.
The boys team will compete this weekend in the 3A Northern duals to determine seeding for next month’s regional tournament at Wooster High School in Reno. Duals start at 2 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday at Fernley High School.
For the girls, the regional tournament is Friday and Saturday at McQueen High School. The top-four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the state tournament in two weeks in Fallon.
In the boys division of the Spring Creek tournament, Lonnie Adams (138 pounds) and Carson Melendy (157) each finished second, and Manuel Barros (106) Evan Mackuliak (120) each took fourth.
Adams won his first two by fall in the first period before scoring a 17-0 tech fall in the quarterfinals. Adams pinned Spring Creek’s Jaxson Taylor in the second period of the semifinal. The senior grappler, though, lost by tech fall (21-4) to Buhl’s (Idaho) Raidyn Pugsley in the championship.
Melendy won four of his five matches by fall, beginning with a pin in the first round followed by a 17-1 tech fall. He pinned Reno’s David Fong in the first period of the third round before decisioning Weiser’s (Idaho) Stockton Young, 11-4, in the quarterfinal. After a 17-1 tech fall win over Moapa Valley’s Max Bromley, Melendy lost a 9-8 decision to Fernley’s Riley McCullar in the championship.
Barros made it to the semifinal round before his first loss of the tournament after scoring a tech fall (15-0) and fall in the first two matches. He fell to Elko’s Bradley Nelson in the first period of the semifinals but pinned Truckee’s Ace Pena in the consolation semifinals. Barros lost 8-6 to Virgin Valley’s Malachi Jordan in the third-place bout.
Mackuliak won his first two by tech fall (20-4) and fall but he fell to Douglas’ Cody Highfill in the second period of the quarterfinal. He won his next two by tech fall (19-4) and fall against Truckee and Elko opponents before decisioning Twin Falls’ (Idaho) Ash Reeves, 11-5. Mackuliak, though, fell in the third period of the third-place match to Caldwell’s (Idaho) Kasen Potts.
Evan Garcia (126) scored 11.5 teams but didn’t place after going 3-2 before a 10-8 loss to Reno’s Ethan Cota ended his day in the consolation’s sixth round. Andre Green (132) scored eight team points but didn’t place, as well, after finishing 2-2. Colton Blanmenship (190) scored four team points despite not placing to finish 2-2.
Trey Bradley (120), Nathan Anderson (132), Rio Segura (132), Lars Rasmussen (138), Neal McIntrye (144) and Tyson Wilson (285) each finished 1-2. Collin Werle (113) and Tayven Martinez (144) finished 0-2.
FITZER LEADS GIRLS
Tommie Fitzer (130/135) finished second in her weight class after winning her first three matches by fall. She pinned her first two opponents in the first period before advancing to the championship with a fall with 24 seconds left in the match. Fitzer lost to Hug’s Kaitlyn de la Torre, 12-7, in the medal match.
Zoe Rasmussen (140/145) scored five team points but missed out on placing. She lost her first match by major decision, 14-3, before decisioning White Pine’s Olivia Moskoff, 5-0, and pinning Caldwell’s Alexandra Rodriguez-Zavala. She fell in her final bout.
Melody Garcia-Bishop (100/105) and Mckayla Taylor (120/125) lost in both of their matches.
