Nevada State Police Director George Togliatti has appointed Michael Edgell as colonel of the Nevada Highway Patrol Division.

Edgell’s law enforcement and public safety experience encompasses over 25 years. He joined the Department of Public Safety/Nevada State Police in 1998 and served within multiple divisions, beginning with the Nevada Highway Patrol, where he served for 22 years, starting as a trooper in commercial and traffic safety enforcement and as a public information officer.

He was promoted from the rank of trooper to the rank of sergeant, overseeing training and personnel and continued his rise in rank to become a lieutenant supervising the Carson/Tahoe/Minden regions.

Edgell transferred to the training division, promoting to the position of deputy chief and overseeing the department’s academy and training programs statewide. He then promoted to captain and deputy chief of the department’s investigation division.

In 2023, Edgell retired from service, however his retirement was brief – he once again answered the call to serve, returning to the department as the chief of the investigation division, managing statewide investigations into homicides, illegal drug activity and other major crimes.

Edgell will return to the division that he began his law enforcement career in and take command as the colonel of the Nevada Highway Patrol, overseeing the division’s three regions across the state of Nevada.
