On Friday, from 4 a.m. to 5:30 a.m., Carson City Health and Human Services (CCHHS) will conduct ground fogging as part of the Mosquito Abatement Program.
“The ground fogging will take place in northeast Carson City, including the Riverview Park neighborhood and the Apollo Drive area. This treatment aims to control the adult mosquito population and protect public health,” according to a news release.
CCHHS vehicles are expected to drive through designated streets, emitting a spray or fog that targets adult flying mosquitoes.
“The operation is designed to reduce the number of mosquitoes in these areas and minimize the risk of illness to the public,” said the release. “The effectiveness of this treatment can last from one hour to up to three days, depending on environmental conditions and the presence of mosquitoes.
“The fog targets mosquitoes in the air but may not reach those resting in lawns or shrubbery. For additional protection, residents are encouraged to use a barrier spray around their properties.”
CCHHS uses ULV (ultralow volume) chemicals, which are released in droplets. Approximately one ounce of the product can treat a one-acre area, the release said.
The health department also advised residents to take personal measures against mosquitoes including avoidance of dusk and dawn hours, light-colored protective clothing, mosquito netting, door and window screens and insect repellant.
“Repellents with DEET offer longer protection; concentrations of 10% to 25% are generally sufficient,” the city said. “Apply repellents to clothing whenever possible and use sparingly on exposed skin. Always follow label instructions and consult a physician before using repellents on young children.”
During fogging, residents should stay indoors with windows and doors closed, turn off AC units, bring inside pet food or water dishes, cover or remove outdoor toys or pools, ponds or bird baths and avoid treated areas till the pesticide has dried.
