The Carson City School District is warning students and parents about a scamming app and website called “NIL Club” that falsely claims to help high school athletes earn money through athletics.
In a Tuesday news release, the district said that any communication from NIL Club, whether via app or text message, should be considered a scam.
The Athletics Department at Carson High School has learned that NIL Club is texting individuals and claiming to offer opportunities related to athletic involvement. The scam focuses on soliciting fundraiser support and NIL Club sign-ups, which have hidden fees and charges.
NIL — Name, Image, Likeness — has become a source for college athletes to earn income, but the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) have regulations prohibiting high school athletes from receiving any form of payment related to athletics.
“While it is not our position to debate the merits of current college athletes earning money from their NIL, it should be understood that these changes do not affect current high school student-athletes. Current high school student-athletes CANNOT earn money as a result of their connection to their high school team.” Dr. Karissa L. Niehoff, NFHS executive director, wrote in a letter posted on the NIAA website.
