“Empty Bowls” were filled earlier this month with ice cream during a summer edition of the fundraiser normally associated with hot soup.
The ice cream social hosted at Western Nevada College was a local iteration of the global grassroots movement to raise money for food-related charities. Participants chose a dish to take home from more than 150 handmade ceramic pieces. The empty bowls serve as a reminder of those in the community who face the challenges of hunger on a daily basis.
Event coordinator and WNC ceramics instructor Jeanne Evatt said she and some of her friends and a variety of students, college staff and the community had volunteered many hours over the past couple of years to throw and decorate the pieces.
Lucy Carnahan, Fallon Chamber of Commerce executive director, said the donations will help to fill three “Fallon Cares” boxes in town, formerly known as “Karma Boxes.” The boxes are regularly filled with nonperishable food, first aid items and toiletries for anyone to take and use.
A limited number of the handmade bowls are still available in exchange for a donation of a non-perishable food item, a hygiene item or cash. Carnahan said she will keep them in the Chamber office at 290 W. Williams Ave., for about a week.
