Wyatt Peek and Caleb Edgmon qualified for the National High School Finals Rodeo.
The duo recorded a fourth-place finish with a 6.730-second short-go round to finish with 216 total points and squeeze into the top of the standings at last month’s state finals in Winnemucca. The top-four advanced to the national event while those who finished between fifth and 25th qualified for next month’s Silver State International Rodeo.
The national rodeo event is July 13-19 at the Sweetwater Events Complex in Rock Springs, Wyo.
After beginning with 155 season points, Peek and Edgmon finished the first go with a time of 23.87 seconds before dropping the time by more than half – 11.610 seconds – in the second go to add 12.5 points to their total. They finished with a short-go time of 6.730 seconds and 25 points, and an average go-time of 42.210 seconds for 21 points.
The top mark came from Fallon’s Jace Jepson, who competes for Pahrump Rodeo Club, and Fernley’s Kade McKnight, who finished with 324.5 points. Jepson also qualified for nationals in tie-down roping, winning the event with 331.5 points and taking second in steer wrestling with 308 points. Jepson also finished second in the all-around cowboy standings with 964 points after McKnight won with 1,069.
Brooke Allison fell one spot shy of qualifying for nationals in goat tying, but she will get to compete in next month’s SSIR.
In goat tying, she secured fifth place with 191 total points, which included 171 season points. She recorded a first-go time of 12.22 seconds followed by a short-go time of 7.7 seconds to add 20 points to her total. She posted an average go-time of 3 minutes, 39.92 seconds. In breakaway roping, Allison accumulated 14 season points.
In tie-down roping, Peek finished eighth with 192 total points after coming in with 161 season points. He logged a first-go time of 11.44 seconds for 22.5 points but slipped in the second-go with a time of 18.9. He didn’t post a short-go time.
Aubrey Flower competed in barrel racing and pole bending, qualifying for the SSIR in the former.
In pole bending, she placed 25th with a total of 26 points, all coming from the season. She recorded a first-go time of 24.8 seconds followed by a second-go time of 24.396. In barrel racing, Flower finished 38th but wasn’t able to record any points. She finished the first-go in 17.336 seconds and second-go in 18.093.
Lauren Goings competed in both team roping and breakaway roping events.
In team roping, she and her partner, Walker River’s Cierra Johnson, finished 21st with 27 total points after coming in with 24.5 season points. They didn’t post a first-go time but then finished the second-go in 14.88 seconds for 2.5 points. Both qualified for the SSIR.
In breakaway roping, Goings placed 45th after recording a short-go time of 10.09.
