The Churchill County School Board unanimously agreed to give new life to an old baseball field at their May 28 meeting.

Superintendent Derild Parsons said the field on East Richards Street has not received much maintenance other than annual weed removal for at least 10 years. When the Fallon Hornets Baseball Club approached him about a possible maintenance and use agreement, Parsons said he was interested.

The contract designates the responsibility for the field’s upkeep, water and electricity payments and insurance to the club for 10 years. The school district will not incur any costs and will also save on the cost of weed removal. The renovated field will be available for use by the community, high school teams and for baseball tournaments.

Through private funding and donations the Hornets plan to restore the landscaping and the buildings and install a new scoreboard. The team also hopes to do something to preserve the current scoreboard.

Work has begun on and around the field. A set of bleachers was recently demolished, overflowing trash cans have been cleared and the sprinkler system is restored to regular use.
