A Fallon family is “starting over from scratch” after a fire burned through their home June 8.
The Sastahite family lost their home and personal belongs in the blaze that swept through their neighborhood in the Sheckler Road area.
A GoFundMe page has raised more than $7,000 as of Tuesday, which is short of a $10,000 goal.
According to the GoFundMe page, the family’s three daughters, ages 6 to 14, are without clothing, school supplies and personal items. The family lost their pets, chickens and goats.
According to the information, “The family is facing the overwhelming challenge of starting over from scratch. They need help with everything — temporary housing, food, clothing, and essentials for daily life.”
According to Churchill County/Fallon Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jared Dooley, the fire burned fences and trees. Several residences on Rivers Edge Drive had burned trees and fences, and one house’s garage was destroyed. A mobile home, shop, trees and brush were burned on the Reno Highway, and the Sastahites’ home was destroyed as were the garage, vehicles, camp trailer, trees and pets.
Dooley said the Federal Fire Department from Naval Air Station responded as did a number of fire agencies from outside the county to include Lyon and Washoe counties, the Nevada Division of Forestry and Bureau of Land Management.
Banner Churchill Emergency Medical Services and Churchill County Search and Rescue were called.
Law enforcement agencies also assisted to include Churchill County Sheriff’s, Fallon Police Department, Nevada Highway Patrol.
“The head count is a little tough to nail down with all the responding agencies,” Dooley said. “I would guess we had 75 firefighters with more than 30 apparatus on scene.”
Dooley said the fire department remained on the scene for more than 10 hours.
“The thing that was amazing was all the help from the other agencies like Banner, NDOT, Search and Rescue and from the friends and neighbors who housed and transported animal,” Dooley added.
