16-year-old shot in Carson City; suspect arrested

A 16-year-old was shot late Wednesday and the 18-year-old suspect was arrested Thursday, according to a Friday news release from the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.

Oscar Vargas-Manriquez, 18, of Carson City is being held at the Carson City Detention Center on multiple charges, CCSO said. The victim was not identified.

Thursday, shortly after midnight, the victim arrived at the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno with life-threatening injuries. The victim underwent surgery and is expected to survive.

CCSO determined the shooting occurred in the apartment complex at 1740 N. Edmonds Drive around 11:45 p.m., on Wednesday, the release said.

CCSO detectives, assisted by investigators from the Nevada Division of Investigation, took Vargas-Manriquez into custody in the 1300 block of East William Street on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. A firearm was recovered in Vargas-Manriquez’ possession.

Search warrants were later executed in the 1700 block of North Edmonds Drive and the 1000 block of Woodside Drive.

Vargas-Manriquez is being held on charges including:

• Battery with a deadly weapon, causing substantial bodily harm;

• Acting in wanton disregard, causing substantial bodily harm;

• Discharging a firearm in public;

• Possession of marijuana, under 1 ounce.
