A county without a “seat!” — Beck was in from Washoe yesterday. He reports a queer state of affairs there. It seems that on Tuesday the “kidnapper case” came up in the District Court, and that the defense raised the point that there could be no trial of it in Washoe in as much as that place was no longer the county seat. Under the state of affairs, the case was postponed until the 15th of July. Is Washoe City the county seat or Reno?

The question of the site for the new library building in agitation the public mind to a considerable extent in Carson. Nine out of every 10 people condemn the idea of a site in the rear of the Capitol building where the beauties of the building would be hidden, and the whole thing be a mere annex of the Capitol.

Sen. James G. Scrugham, junior senator from Nevada, died Saturday afternoon in the U.S. Navy hospital in San Diego, where he had been a patient for several months. Death was caused by a general breakdown which affected his kidneys.

The Nevada Four Wheel Warriors have announced a joint excursion with the Sierra Treasurer Hunters of Sacramento according to Mrs. Nate Helmer, publicity chairman. The trip will leave Carson and travel south on Highway 395. Camp will be on the north side of Highway 4 below Cottage Springs, about seven miles above Calaveras Big Trees Park.

Pic Nic to-day. The Presbyterian and Methodist Sunday Schools will unite today in a picnic celebration at Simons’ Grove, near the head of Washoe Lake. Children desiring to attend are requested to meet at the Presbyterian Church this morning at 8 o’clock, at which time and place carriages will be in attendance. A delightful time is anticipated.

News came from Markleeville, Alpine County, that night before last an Italian, stopping at the Silver glance mill, got up in the night, and with an axe assaulted three men sleeping in the same room. John Scocia, a well-known wood man, was chopped about the head and will die. Two other men were badly injured but will recover. The Italian is supposed to have gone mad.

Yesterday morning the employees of the substation in this city were startled by the burning out of a telephone and the crossing up of power lines, putting some of them out of commission. Forman wright started over the line immediately to locate the trouble at Howard’s ranch and found a large sand hill crane had come in contact with a high power line.

Funeral services for Mrs. Nellie Verrill Mighels Davis, who quietly passed away in her sleep Saturday, in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lucy Crowell. Mrs. Davis, who would have been 101 yeas old next September, was one of the most outstanding women in Nevada history. After the death of her husband, Mr. Mighels, she married Sam Davis, who carried on editing the Nevada Appeal.

The Capitol is two months old today. The amount of work accomplished in that time is somewhat wonderful. The masons are already turning the arches of the windows in the first story. We think the second story will be completed by the 25th of August.

Barrett’s circus managers did not wet down the circus ring, and in consequence the clouds of dust pricked about $300 from the night’s house. Ten dollars work of watering would have made everybody comfortable.

The youth’s recreation center after making an appeal for a record player for use at the center has been presented with an automatic record player by Fay Shannon of this city and Glenbrook, Lake Tahoe. The large machine will automatically both sides of 16 records and will be a welcome addition to the “Idle Inn.”

Dedication ceremonies and open house at the new state highway headquarters will be held this afternoon, W.C. Wright state highway engineer announced.
