Carson, Dayton, SL spring sports underway

The Carson High School track and field team kicked off its 2025 spring campaign at Douglas on Saturday.

On the track, the boys team was second of four teams in attendance with 37 team points.

Kekoa Mitchell won the discus with a throw of 126 feet, seven inches to kick off his senior season. Mitchell was fourth in the 100-meter dash in 11.75 seconds and second in the shot put with a throw of 38-9 inches.

In the distance events, junior Sean Thornton took first in the boys 1,600 with a time of 4:45.49 while sophomore Quinn Kuchnicki was third in 4:54.89.

Senior Sawyer Macy won the 3,200 in 10:02.18 while Thornton was second (10:44.08) and Kuchnicki was fourth (11:32.1).

Junior Tyler Wright took third in the 110-meter hurdles in 21.54.

The Senators put out a pair of 4x400 relay teams that finished second and third behind Reno in 4:02.97 and 4:19.45.

Aaron Linehan was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 36-6 and fourth in the discus, recording a mark of 101-3.

Freshman Rudy Torres was third in the high jump with a clearance of 5-0 while junior Mark Walther won the pole vault, clearing 10 feet.

Dean Parr was fourth in the long jump (14-4.5) and Walther was fifth (17-2.5).

On the girls side, Carson finished in third place as a team.

Junior Saule Astronomo was fourth in the 400 in 1:06.63. Sophomore Nastasia Sulprizio won the 800 in 2:38.11 for the Senators.

Vea Miner and Brianna Rodriguez-Nunez were second and third in the 1,600 with times of 5:52.77 and 5:52.95, respectively.

Junior Hannah Budd made her return to action with a 5:53.69 in the 1,600 to take fifth.

Miner and Jinnie Ponczoch were second and third in the 3,200 in 13:42.54 and 13:42.55.

Two freshmen finished in the top three in the hurdles as Mara Kuchnicki was third in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.55.

Fellow freshman Madison Krueger was second in the 300-meter hurdles in 51.75.

Krueger also took second in the triple jump with a leap of 29 feet and one-half inch.

Julie Salanoa and Emjae Salanoa finished first and second, respectively, in the shot put with throws of 31-3 and 27-10.

The two flipped in the discus as Emjae won the event with a throw of 100-1 while Julie was second with a mark of 72-2.


CARSON SOFTBALL TAKES OPENER AGAINST RENO

Carson High School softball opened its 2025 season by blasting through Reno by a 15-2 final score.

Kiele Franco and Sofia Morrison were 4-for-5 and 3-for-5 at the plate, respectively, with an RBI apiece.

Jordan Brubaker launched her first home run of the season while Danika Presswood had two doubles and three RBIs.

UP NEXT: Carson (1-0) is off until Friday, when the Senators will travel to take on Pleasant Valley (1-0) in a tournament.


CARSON BASEBALL SPLITS TWO

Carson High School baseball opened up its season with a 3-2 loss against Clark, but responded with an 8-7 win over Cimarron-Memorial on Friday.

Landon Martin and Tyler LaFollete were each credited with an RBI in the loss.

On the mound, Will Raggett went five innings and allowed two earned runs with a strikeout.

In the 8-7 win over C-M, the Senators saw sophomore leadoff hitter Chase Grundy go 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Sophomore Noah Hutchison doubled and drove in two RBIs in the win while Julian Pineda also recorded a double and an RBI.

UP NEXT: Carson (1-1) will be at home Thursday afternoon against McQueen (1-2-1). First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.


SWIMMING: SENATORS OPEN AGAINST GALENA

The Carson High School girls swim team defeated Galena in a dual, 138-125, Saturday morning.

On the boys side, the Grizzlies bested the Senators, 160-109.

Larkin Russell grabbed eight team points for the Carson girls team with a first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 5:29.02.

The 400-yard relay of Russell, Gloria Dooley, Addison Meyer and Eleanor Romeo posted a time of 4:21.96 to win the event and score 10 points.

Dooley was second as an individual in the 100-yard freestyle (1:04.6) and the 200-yard freestyle (2:29.97).

In the 50-yard freestyle, Ava Leao was second in 32.50 while Chloe Clark took third in 32.59 seconds.

Russell was second for the Senators in the 100-yard fly, touching the wall in 1:05.22.

On the boys side, the 200-yard medley relay team of Clayton Whalen, Ewan Kalley, Sampson Massie and Derick Hensley won the event in 1:50.35 securing 10 points. Hensley also win the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 1:05.38.

Massie won the 100-yard freestyle in 51.04 as an individual while Kalley won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:14.16.

Morway, Whaley, Adam Zoghra-Awali and Massie won the 200-meter relay in 1:37.03.

In the 400-yard relay it was Kalley, Morway, Hensley and Zoghra-Awali taking first place in 3:37.09.

DAYTON SOFTBALL 4-0 TO START

Dayton High School softball outscored its opponents 49-13 through its first four games of the season, putting together an unbeaten start in the process.

The Dust Devils began the season with a 17-1 non-varsity win and an 18-3 win over Pershing County.

In the win over the Mustangs, Dayton scored in each of the five innings before hitting the run rule.

Junior LaSade Conti went 4-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs.

Fellow junior Lisinita Tulimafua-Curran drove in a game-high four RBIs while going 2-for-4 at the dish with a double.

Dayton’s next two wins were a 9-7 come-from-behind victory over Yerington and a 5-2 win over White Pine.

Senior Alex Munoz went 2-for-4 with a double and six RBIs in the win over the Lions while Conti fanned seven over three innings in the circle.

UP NEXT: Dayton (4-0) will take on Hug (0-2) on Saturday in a doubleheader, beginning at 10 a.m.


DUST DEVIL BASEBALL OPENS 3-1

Dayton High School baseball dropped its first game of the season to Yerington, 7-1, but responded with wins over Battle Mountain (9-0), Pershing County (10-4) and Lowry (16-1).

Against Battle Mountain, sophomore Adrian Acosta and junior Jacob Jeffcoat both drove in two RBIs apiece while Beau Walker was credited with an RBI.

On the hill, River Aten struck out 11 hitters over 5.2 innings of work.

In the win over Pershing County, junior Dallan Cowee was 3-for-3 with a triple while senior Ryan Frank drove in three RBIs and hit a triple of his own.

Walker and Jordan Kennedy each recorded an RBI in the win.

Sophomore Duke Evans struck out 12 in six innings while allowing one earned run and one walk.

Seven different Dayton players tallied at least one RBI in the blowout win over Lowry on Saturday.

Brody Dupoy was 3-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs while Kaydn Clifford went 2-for-2 with three RBIs for the Dust Devils.

Frank was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs in the win.

UP NEXT: Dayton (3-1) will host Hug (2-0) for a doubleheader Saturday. Game 1 will start at 10 a.m.


FALCON BASEBALL GETS TWO WINS

Sierra Lutheran High School baseball opened up its first weekend of play with a pair of lopsided wins over Carlin (15-0) and Pyramid Lake (15-3).

The Falcons fell to North Tahoe (10-2) and tied Excel Christian (9-9) in their first games of the season.

In the 15-0 shutout win over Carlin, freshman Noah Ramirez went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs.

Sophomore Matt Fahey was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs while junior Grayson Ricks went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs out of the leadoff spot.

On the hill, freshman Shaun Castro no-hit Carlin over four innings with six strikeouts and two walks allowed.

Against Pyramid Lake, Ramirez drove in two more, going 1-for-2 with a triple.

Castro and Fahey were each credited with an RBI, as well.

UP NEXT: Sierra Lutheran (2-1-1) is at home this weekend with a three-game set against West Wendover (1-2). Game 1 is Friday at 4 p.m.; the second and third games will be a Saturday doubleheader, beginning at 10 a.m.
